Job Description:VIB is an entrepreneurial, non-profit research institute in life sciences, closely affiliated with the universities across Flanders. Our mission is to push the boundaries of scientific knowledge in life sciences, translating these insights and breakthroughs into real-world solutions for citizens, patients, and farmers. The VIB Technologies program (https://vib.be/en/technologies#/ ) serves as the centralized scientific research infrastructure of the institute, providing scientists with access to cutting-edge, innovative technologies. It includes a team of over 120 staff and 16 state-of-the-art core facilities, each focused on specific technologies and located across VIB sites in Ghent, Leuven, Antwerp, and Brussels. These core facilities play a crucial role in supporting VIB's +1,800 researchers with their expertise and advanced resources.
Early 2023, the Spatial Catalyst was launched to facilitate the introduction and application of spatial technologies in VIB. The experts of this team consult, train, and collaborate with users for experimental design, assay performance, data acquisition, and analysis. The successful candidate will contribute to the team in Ghent by performing hands-on wet lab activities, ranging from tissue quality control, over sample preparation to execution of the spatial experiments.
Main Responsibilities:- Tissue collection, tissue sectioning, and staining
- Perform sample preparation for different spatial transcriptomics and proteomics technologies (Visium (HD), MACSima, Phenocycler, Merscope, Xenium, etc.)
- Train power users in sample preparation
- Follow-up evolution of newly trained users
- Report your activities to your supervisor and the rest of the team
- Manage our stock reagents and maintain equipment
- Experience working as a Professional bachelor in laboratory technology, biochemistry, biotechnology, biomedical sciences, or equivalent
- Knowledge of various molecular techniques (DNA/RNA extraction, PCR and qPCR, sequencing, etc.)
- Good English skills, oral and written
- Service-minded and interested in technology
- Meticulous, well-organized, structured, and able to autonomously plan and execute tasks
- Team player
- Eager to learn and adapt in a fast-evolving environment
- Experience in histology and/or microscopy is a plus
- Experience in spatial technologies is an asset
- Experience in working in a core facility is a plus
