YOUR TASKS
- At least 50% of your assignment will be spent on academic research in preparation of a doctoral dissertation.
- At least 20% of your assignment will be spent on assisting in the teaching activities at the department at bachelor or master level.
- You will assist in the internal and external services of the department.

DEVELOPMENT OF A NOVEL CVID SUBCLASSIFICATION TOOL FOR EARLY DETECTION OF RISK FACTORS
Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID) is characterized by a defect in the B-cell compartment, low antibody levels, and an increased susceptibility to infections. CVID patients display significant heterogeneity in clinical presentation (ranging from mild to more severe non-infectious complications), age of symptom onset, and disease progression.
Flow cytometry, and to a lesser extent genetics, play a central role in the diagnosis of CVID. Over the past decades, several flow-based classification models have been proposed. However, these models show limited correlation with clinical phenotypes and fall short in explaining the full heterogeneous CVID spectrum. Moreover, most classifications are primarily based on B cells.
Standardized next-generation flow cytometry (NGF) based on spectral flow has the potential to further refine the current CVID classification and offers the option to include T cells in the classification. In addition to NGF, this project will also correlate epigenetic dysregulation (such as DNA methylation) with immunological and clinical heterogeneity. Immune cell profiling based on DNA methylation allows for a more in-depth and simultaneous characterization of multiple immune cell types. The technical limitations of both strategies also differ (e.g., sample stability). The ultimate goal of this project is the integration of epigenetic and flow cytometric profiling for CVID. Integration of the NGF data with the in-house generated epigenetic data will provide new opportunities to optimize stratification of CVID patients. This will ultimately facilitate quicker recognition of complications, improve survival rates, increase quality of life, finally resulting in improved and more personalized care for CVID patients.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- You hold a degree of Master in Medicine, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Bioengineering (cell and genetic engineering), or equivalent. The degree requirement needs to be fulfilled at the start of your appointment.
- For diplomas awarded outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence (NARIC) must be submitted.
- You are interested in academic and/or project-based research and services.
- Any teaching experience or participation in extra training, conferences, etc. is recommended.
- You have excellent teaching and communication skills.
WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU
- We offer you a two-year appointment, which may be renewed twice for two years, on condition that the previous term was given a positive evaluation. Attention: If you have been previously appointed as a junior assistant or doctoral fellow at a university within the Flemish Community, this appointment will be deducted from the maximum term of appointment, which is six years at the most according to the Codex of Higher Education.
- Your appointment will start on 1 June 2025 at the earliest.
