About the Climate Finance and Economics Practice

The Climate Finance and Economics practice is a new, growing and evolving practice at Genesis. Our purpose is to unlock value by increasing flows of climate finance from higher to lower income countries, fostering the role of the private sector in climate finance and improving the preparedness of societies to address the climate change emergency proactively and adequately. We do this through working across four key areas identified which includes working to realise the Just Transition, unlocking and facilitating the flow of Climate Finance, building Resilience and Adaptation through climate finance, and supporting a Corporate Transition.

About the position

The Climate Finance and Economics practice is searching for a dynamic experienced leader with consulting background in climate finance, who is eager to join the growth of this new area of work in Genesis and passionate about accelerating the climate transition. As a Principal Consultant, you will be responsible for providing high-quality advice and guidance on climate finance and sustainable investment strategies to public and private sector clients, with a strong focus on resource mobilization. Responsibilities include:

  1. Work closely with the partner and build a business together with enthusiasm and teamwork, with a focus on the growth of our climate finance area.
  2. Bid for, design, and execute consultancy assignments for donor, corporate, foundation and government clients.
  3. Provide strategic advice to public and private sector clients on climate finance and sustainable investment strategies, with a focus on resource mobilization.
  4. Identify opportunities for clients to access climate finance, including through international climate funds, development banks, and other public and private sources of financing.
  5. Develop financial models and business cases for climate change mitigation and adaptation projects, including innovative financing solutions such as blended finance, green bonds, and climate risk insurance.
  6. Lead project teams and manage client relationships to ensure the successful delivery of projects, including managing stakeholder engagement and consultation processes with local communities, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders.
  7. Use quantitative (and qualitative) analysis tools to inform analytical problems.
  8. Solve problems with a high level of autonomy, logically, creatively, and laterally.
  9. Take personal responsibility for high levels of excellence, analytical insights, with exemplary attention to detail.
  10. Prepare and lead high quality written and visual communication.
  11. Play a leading, managing, and mentoring role with more junior consultants.
  12. Conduct research and analysis on emerging trends and best practices in climate finance and sustainable investment, with a focus on resource mobilization.
  13. Provide thought leadership through participation in conferences, events, and publications, and represent the organization in relevant networks and partnerships.

The candidate can be located in Johannesburg, London or elsewhere and be willing to travel for assignments and spend time at the Genesis office in London and/or Johannesburg.

Job Requirements

Skills, experience and competencies

  1. Understanding of the financial industry and financial markets.
  2. Demonstrated experience in developing sustainable financing mechanisms and instruments, especially in relation to project finance, green-infrastructure finance and effective public-private partnerships.
  3. Demonstrated experience in resource mobilization. Familiarity with the Green Climate Fund is a plus.
  4. Financial structuring and financial modelling skills - applied to mitigation and adaptation.
  5. Experience in developing climate finance governance frameworks.
  6. Strong masters' level degrees in Economics, Sustainable Finance or related fields.
  7. Purpose-driven, enthusiastic, ethical, respectful, lives by Genesis values.
  8. Strong self-starting problem solver, critical thinker, and analyst.
  9. Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills.
  10. Project management abilities.
  11. Comfort with quantitative and qualitative research techniques.
  12. Ability to work closely with senior leaders.
