Senior Python Developer
Location: Brussels, Belgium
Contract: Freelance

About the role
Our client is a leading organisation within the Belgian energy sector, and they are looking for an experienced Senior Python Developer to join their IT and Development team in Brussels on a freelance basis.
The role suits someone who combines strong Python skills with hands-on frontend and backend experience, and the analytical mindset to turn business requirements into technical solutions. You will work closely with business stakeholders and technical teams to analyse existing processes, develop new functionality and improve business-critical applications.
Previous experience in the energy or utilities sector would be a strong advantage, though it is not essential.
Main responsibilities
- Design, develop and maintain scalable Python-based applications and services
- Work across the full stack, contributing to both frontend interfaces and backend systems
- Analyse business requirements and translate them into clear technical specifications and development tasks
- Collaborate with business analysts, product owners and other stakeholders to understand functional needs
- Develop and integrate APIs to enable seamless communication between applications and systems
- Identify opportunities to improve existing applications, processes and system performance
- Take part in technical discussions, architecture decisions, testing and code reviews
- Take ownership of technical deliverables throughout the development lifecycle
Essential
- Strong professional experience in Python development
- Proven experience in both frontend and backend development
- Experience designing, developing and integrating REST APIs
- Good understanding of modern web technologies, including JavaScript, HTML and CSS
- Experience with relational databases and SQL
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to understand complex business requirements and translate them into technical solutions
- Experience working in Agile development environments
- Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Desirable
- Previous experience in the energy, electricity, gas or utilities sector
- Experience with Python frameworks such as FastAPI, Django or Flask
- Experience with frontend frameworks such as React, Angular or Vue.js
- Familiarity with cloud platforms, CI/CD pipelines and containerisation
- Experience working on business-critical applications within complex enterprise environments
