Position Summary


The Secretary General is the custodian of our organisational vision, mission and strategy ensuring strong membership engagement and a well-coordinated, focused and adequately funded secretariat.

As one of the main public spokespersons for the organisation, the Secretary General ensures that Social Platform is a respected, sustainable, and credible entity.

They should be agile in responding to advocacy and financial opportunities while safeguarding the organisation's reputation and financial future.

The Secretary General has, and continues to develop, an extensive advocacy network at EU political level and is extremely focused on delivering impactful results and inspiring the organisation to attain sustainable socioeconomic justice for the people.

They are an inspiring and engaging team leader who cares about the performance, development and wellbeing of staff and members alike, work closely with the President of the organisation and support the Management Committee and other statutory bodies.


Main Responsibilities
Strategic leadership

  • Implementation of the strategic plan ensuring that an adequate monitoring and evaluation is in place
  • Supporting statutory governance processes
  • Political representation
  • Membership engagement/support and recruiting new members according to Social
Platform's membership strategy

  • Partnership/network building for political and financial capital
  • Management of the secretariat
Leadership towards the broader social movement and policy makers

  • Leads Social Platform's support of its members to ensure maximum impact on EU policies in the areas agreed upon with members in the strategic vision and mission, particularly in advance of the European elections in 202
  • Developing a new Strategy post2024 through an inclusive process with members and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Works to ensure visibility and the active contribution of the social movement by appropriate positioning of members towards both civil society stakeholders and EU institutions on civil dialogue and participatory democracy.
  • Is one of the public faces of Social Platform, speaking at external events as well as towards mainstream media, asserting Social Platform's profile as an opinion leader and influencer to the achievement of social justice and social cohesion.
  • Strengthens visibility of Social Platform through regular commentaries on ongoing developments to a wide readership of civil society and institutional stakeholders.
Promoting active participation of members and good governance

  • Provides guidance to and works closely with the Management Committee to ensure overall organizational development and sound governance mechanisms and processes. (The Management Committee delegates the daytoday administration and management of the Secretariat to the Secretary General while maintaining accountability for theSecretary General's performance.)
  • Develops transparent, participatory, and responsive working methods, linking policy with communications, to promote optimal contributions by members of the Steering Group, responsible for political leadership of the Social Platform.
  • Inspires and motivates members to gain greater commitment to the network and to carry out advocacy related to the agreed strategic vision and mission of Social Platform, adopted by members over a multiyear process.
Ensuring effective management and leadership of the Secretariat

  • Oversees the implementation of Social Platform's multiyear strategic vision, mission, and overall objectives and campaigns.
  • Responsible for developing and implementing annual work planning.
  • Recruits, leads, develops, and evaluates team members, and supports them in carrying out
Social Platform's mission and targets and goals indicated in annual work programmes.

  • Ensures that Social Platform is an attractive, happy and healthy place to work in line with our wellbeing approach to work and staff rules and regulations.
Managing and developing sound financial resources

  • Works to secure financial resources to achieve overall objectives and to carry out work programmes.
  • Has overall responsibility for reporting requirements (both financial and operational) to funders and compliance with funding contracts.

Advocacy, leads on delivering and updating funding strategy to diversify sources of funding, ensure financial stability, and build greater financial reserves.


  • Oversees regular financial statements to Treasurer, Management Committee, and annually to the General Assembly.
  • With support from the Head of Operations, ensures that Social Platform has sound internal financial controls, practices, and procedures, as well as risk assessment policies.
