The Biotechnology Department of Ghent University carries out research with both mammalian and plant cells.

In this interdisciplinary research, advanced analytical techniques are applied including PCR, qPCR, atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman and infrared spectroscopy (fluorescence microscopy and impedance spectroscopy), and epigenetic analyses.

These methods will be applied to investigate cell biology related processes relevant for immunotherapy in humans, and the defense response of plants against pathogens, such as for example, regulated cell death i.e.

apoptosis and ferroptosis, chimeric antigen receptor T-cells; cell uptake of nanoparticles; and control of uptake by cells.

YOUR TASKS

  • At least 50% of your assignment will be spent on academic research in preparation of a doctoral dissertation in the field of cell biology and microscopy.
  • You will assist in the teaching activities at the department, in the domain of cellular and molecular biology and microscopy.
  • You will assist in the internal and external services of the department.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a Master's degree in

Bioscience Engineering:
Cell and Gene Biotechnology, or in Biochemistry and Biotechnology, or an equivalent degree. The degree requirement needs to be fulfilled at the start of your appointment.

  • For diplomas awarded outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence (NARIC) must be submitted.
  • You are interested in academic and/or projectbased research and services in the field of cell biology, epigenetics, nanomaterials and nanobiotechnology
  • You are motivated and have knowledge of biological processes.
  • Any teaching experience or participation in extra training, conferences, etc. is recommended.
  • You have excellent teaching and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Dutch is recommended.

  • We offer you a twoyear appointment, which may be renewed twice for two years, on condition that the previous term was given a positive evaluation

Attention:
If you have been previously appointed as a junior assistant or doctoral fellow at a university within the Flemish Community, this appointment will be deducted from the maximum term of appointment, which is six years at the most according to the Codex of Higher Education
