Fairtrade Belgium is looking for a Junior Policy and Project Officer

Your team


You will collaborate closely with two highly motivated colleagues: the Head of Supply & Impact and the Head of Advocacy.

The Head of Supply & Impact focuses on developing projects and partnerships with companies that extend beyond Fairtrade certification, addressing areas such as living income, carbon, human rights, and environmental due diligence.

Meanwhile, the Head of Advocacy works to shape regulations and policies to elevate sustainability standards, aiming to ensure that paying fair prices becomes an obligation rather than a choice.

You will report to Stijn Decoene, Head of Supply & Impact.

Your mission
The role entails 5 primary focus areas:1.
Compliance support:

researching and interpreting laws and regulations relevant for Fairtrade's most important supply chain commodities: cocoa, coffee and banana (e.g. CSDDD, CSRD, EUDR, EU Organic) (25%). You create a good understanding on the requirements from these new regulations for Fairtrade corporate partners (the licensees).

You support the Head of Supply & Impact to develop new tools and services for companies engaging with Fairtrade to comply with these regulations.

Support to Fairtrade Licensees:

based on the above research and in collaboration with Head of Supply & Impact, you provide support to Fairtrade licensees (25%).


3.
Project support:
support Head of Supply & Impact in project work (20%). You provide support for current and future "beyond certification" projects (e.g. supporting field projects in cocoa plantations, impact studies,). This support in supply chain projects can include coordinating, planning, reporting, monitoring & evaluation, etc.

4.
Institutional fundraising:
identifying funding opportunities for beyond certification projects with licensees and contribute to drafting submissions (20%). You actively scout for possibilities for institutional funds to develop the offer to businesses "beyond certification".

5.
Legal Research and Analysis:
better understanding of legislative proposals and actions to better support our retailers and adapt our policies accordingly. (10%). You assist the Head of Advocacy to lobby and improve supply chain laws and regulations.

Your Profile

Education & Experience

  • You hold a
    Master's Degree in Bioengineering, Economics, Law, Political Science, Development studies or any other equivalent education.
  • No experience is required but relevant voluntary experience is an added value.
  • You are
    younger than 26 years.

Relevant Skills

  • You are allround and enjoy developing a broad range of knowledge and responsibilities (legal, macroeconomics, sociopolitical, project work,).
  • Independence is your forte and you gain energy from exploring new opportunities and initiating projects.
  • You enjoy collaborating with your team and are eager to support and assist your colleagues.
  • Precision, organization, and the ability to prioritize tasks are among your strengths.
  • You feel strongly about contributing to a fairer market situation and fully endorsing the values of Fairtrade Belgium.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, especially Excel and PowerPoint.
  • You have an excellent knowledge of Dutch, French (at least one of both) and English.
