VITO observeert, evalueert en simuleert de impact van menselijke activiteiten op onze natuurlijke hulpbronnen zoals schone lucht, een leefbaar klimaat, schoon drinkwater en onvervuilde bodem. Op basis van sensoren, algoritmes, wetenschappelijk onderbouwde kennisplatformen en ruimtelijke oplossingen bieden we bedrijven en overheden ondersteuning richting een duurzaam beleid.

Binnen dit team zijn we op zoek naar een creatieve en gemotiveerde **data scientist** die verschillende thematische teams van modelleurs (lucht
- en waterkwaliteit, klimaatverandering, geologie, landgebruik,) kan ondersteunen maar ook kan uitdagen met de nieuwste technieken en technologieën op basis van **artificiële intelligentie **en **machine learning**.

Een greep uit jouw takenpakket:

- Je werkt vanuit een horizontaal team zeer nauw samen met verschillende experten in verschillende duurzaamheidsthema's.
- Door het toepassen van jouw kennis van AI en ML technieken draag je bij aan het ontwikkelen van nieuwe modellen en stel je onze experten in staat nieuwe uitdagingen aan te gaan.
- Je daagt de huidige state of the art uit door samen met de experten, vanuit een andere invalshoek (AI en ML) naar hun uitdagingen te kijken.
- Je draagt bij aan de verdere ontwikkeling van thematische modellen om deze geschikt te maken voor de digital twins van onze smart cities
- Jouw kennis en input bepaalt mee de richting van het project en je speelt een essentiële rol in het ontwikkelen van applicaties en platformen.

Must have
- Je hebt een passie voor AI en ML in de ruime zin van het woord en je hebt reeds concrete aantoonbare ervaring in het ontwikkelen en toepassen hiervan.
- Je hebt sterke programmeervaardigheden in Python en ervaring met relevante frameworks en bibliotheken zoals (Geo)Pandas, Scikit-learn, Keras, PyTorch, TensorFlow,.
- Je kan businessnoden en eigen ideeën vormgeven, communiceren, inschatten en implementeren binnen projecten.
- Je behaalde een Master in toegepaste wetenschappen, gespecialiseerd in computerwetenschappen of gelijkwaardig door ervaring.
- Je scoort als teamspeler, bent flexibel ingesteld en werkt klantgericht.
- Je communiceert vlot in het Nederlands en het Engels.
- Je evalueert gebruikte methodes en doet voorstellen tot verbetering.

Nice to have
- Je hebt ervaring met GIS-pakketten en/of geo-IT-tools bv QGIS, SQL en ruimtelijke relationele databanken, bv. PostGIS, ervaring met Linux besturingssystemen en het gebruik van HPC infrastructuur.

- Onze unit is voornamelijk gevestigd in Mol (hoofdlocatie). We hanteren een activiteitgerichte aanpak: onze werkplek wordt bepaald door onze activiteiten. Om een goede teamdynamiek te bevorderen, organiseren we twee connectdagen per week in Mol. Op andere dagen kun je vanuit huis werken, in Mol of vanuit een VITO-satellietkantoor (Antwerpen-Berchem, Genk, Gent, Oostende), afhankelijk van de behoeften van de activiteiten en het team.
