Scientific assistant for project BeFORECAST


The Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (RMI) is hiring a scientific assistant (SW1 or SW2) in the research department to help carry out several tasks in the BeFORECAST project funded by the Energy Transition Funds of the Federal Public Service Economy of the Belgian Federal Government
.



Objectives
BeFORECAST will improve monitoring and forecasting of flow conditions and power extraction in Belgian offshore wind farms by leveraging innovative technologies to assimilate a rich dataset into weather forecasting models at meso
- and microscales. To this end, BeFORECAST will aim to
- include wind-farm wake effects in numerical weather prediction models,
- develop advanced machine learning algorithms on SCADA data from offshore wind turbines, rain and wind data from radars and satellites, profiling lidars and innovative new-sensor technologies installed on ships and on drones "flying for weather",
- develop data assimilation for now
- and forecasting tools, supervised by optimization and machine learning algorithms,
- improve storm alerts that will be made real-time available to wind farm operators and electricity grid operators, which will be a clear and tangible outcome of the project benefiting multiple stakeholders.

RMI project role


The Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium leads work package WP4 devoted to improving forecasting algorithms for operational use with a specific focus on wind-farm wake modeling, and also has a large role in work package WP5 where we demonstrate the impact of efforts in all previous work packages on existing and future Belgian offshore wind farms.

Additionally, RMI will investigate data assimilation of the newly collected drone and lidar data in their NWP models in work package WP3, and has several smaller tasks supporting other consortium members.


Job description
You will help with

  • Implementing and validating a wind farm parameterization in an RMI weather model
  • Test the assimilation of lidar, drone and/or radar data in an RMI weather model
  • Providing the necessary meteorological data to other BeFORECAST consortium members, while also giving technical advice and assistance
  • Investigate postprocessing of offshore wind NWP forecasts with lidar and/or SCADA data
  • Verification of model forecasts and intercomparison with forecasts of consortium members
  • Impact studies: winter storms, ramping and 2nd offshore wind zone (Princess Elisabeth Zone)
  • Publishing in international peerreviewed journals and communication at workshops and conferences

Required competences

You have:

  • A master's degree in science (mathematics, physics or geoscience), civil engineering or bioengineering, with an interest in meteorology and/or wind energy
  • If you obtained your master's degree outside the Benelux, you must also have an equivalence recognition from a foreign diploma or certificate in Flanders (NARIC) or Wallonia (CFWB) for the master's degree (even if you afterwards obtained a PhD in the Benelux)
  • Good knowledge of English and proficient writing skills
  • The ability to work within a team and to communicate research results at the national and international level
  • Knowledge of Linux and experience with scientific programming and scripting in R or Python

The following skills are considered a plus:

  • Experience with handling weather data
  • Experience with forecast verification
  • Experience with programming in FORTRAN
  • Experience with engineering wake models, for instance as implemented in PyWake
  • Experience with visualization and statistical data analysis
