We are looking for a self-motivated and inspirational leader for the role of Head of Analytical Sciences Technology to join us in our Pharmaceutical Sciences organisation, based on the UCB Braine-l'Alleud campus in Belgium

About the role

As Head of Analytical Sciences Technology, you will:

  • Ensure the leadership of a team of highly skilled analytical scientists.
  • Have ownership and full accountability for driving the scouting, development, implementation, and maintenance of new, specific, or advanced analytical technologies required to support the delivery of the UCB synthetic molecules' development pipeline or commercial portfolio (support to commercial manufacturing).
  • Drive the digital transformation (e.g., Predictive Sciences, Data Modelling) and the data management of the Analytical Sciences department, in close collaboration with the Digital Sciences group.
  • Ensure transversal responsibilities across the Pharmaceutical Sciences organisation and beyond to deliver quality, consistency, effectiveness, scientific excellence and/or innovation.


The Head of Analytical Sciences Technology reports to the Head of Analytical Sciences for Pharmaceuticals (ASP) which is a core technical function of the UCB Pharmaceutical Sciences (PS) organization.


Analytical Technologies in scope support the CMC development or commercial support of synthetic molecules (small molecules & peptides) drug substances and drug products and encompass (non-exhaustive and non-restrictive list): Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), qualitative Mass Spectrometry (MS), Automation, advanced Sample Preparation, advanced Chromatography (SFC, 2D), advanced Dissolution, quantitative Spectroscopy (NIR/Raman).


Who you'll work with:

  • Cyrille Pertuy as your Manager and many other amazing colleagues and stakeholders at local and global level.
  • Your team composed of 8 to 10 Analytical Scientists.

What you'll do:

  • Ensure required analytical expertise representation in project subteams via Analytical Scientists.
  • Ensure ownership and full accountability (e.g. scientific & technical excellence) of analytical results and deliverables coming from your group.
  • Ensure the provision of highquality documentation for technical work performed by your group.
  • Provide strategic inputs to contribute to the overall CMC development strategy in the scope of analytical and beyond (i.e. drug substance and drug product).
  • Ensure data interpretation in the context of projects to influence decisions & next steps.
  • Advance projects and activities in a timely manner to successful completion and decision making for milestones.
  • Ensure the optimization and integration of analytical data into the digital framework of the department and beyond as well as foster the use of existing or new digital solutions.
  • Provide strategic inputs to define the Science & Technology (S&T) strategy of PS.
  • Define and drive the implementation of the S&T strategy for Analytical Sciences (incl. data management & digital transformation) with a clear roadmap matching analytical capabilities with current and future development pipeline needs.
  • Demonstrate inspirational leadership for your team and more broadly as a member of the ASP Leadership Team and the PS Leadership Community.
  • Define and/or contribute to the definition of departmental vision, strategies, and initiatives, ensuring alignment of your group in the frame of the overall organization.
  • Manage your team engagement, motivation, performance, and retention.
  • Ensure training of your team in the necessary quality/GMP environment and the personal development of your team members.
  • Ensure that your team operates in compliance with all appropriate regulations (GMP, HSE, IS , SOPs, departmental guidance, and financial targets.
  • Foster strong internal crossfunctional interactions and key external collaborations.
  • Promote an entrepreneurial mindset beyond Roles & Responsibilities.
  • Drive continuous improvement through constructive challenge and healthy debate.
  • Demonstrate proactive contribution to problem solving and scientific crossfertilization beyond the immediate area of your portfolio or transversal responsibilities.
  • Lead transversal initiative(s) to ensure quality, consistency, effectiveness, scientific excellence and/or innovation at ASP and/or PS level.

  • Master's Degree (required) with PhD (preferred) in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g. Analytical Chemistry).
  • Recognized expertise in advanced analytical technologies (e.g. NMR, MS, Spectroscopy,) applied to the development and registration of synthetic molecules (small molecules and/or peptides).
  • Experience in drug substance and drug product development (e.g. clinically relevant specifications, dissolution, etc), PAT, Predictive Sciences and Data Modelling.
