Position: Design Engineer, Optical Circuit Switching

OneTouch Technology is an innovative photonics company developing next generation optical

components for high-performance communication systems for datacom and telecom applications. We

combine advanced engineering, precision manufacturing, and strong supplier partnerships to bring

cutting-edge solutions to market.

Are you passionate about pushing boundaries? Do you thrive in an environment that encourages

curiosity and creativity? Join our team. From silicon photonics experts to industry professionals, we're

building a community that thrives on intellectual curiosity and relentless pursuit of excellence.

We are looking for a design engineer to lead the application of our integrated photonics platform tohigh-speed optical circuit switching. This is a lead role spanning photonics design, electronics design, and system-level design. You will own the switching demonstrator effort and grow it from prototypetowards a product, working closely with the core team that drives our technology strategy fromBelgium.

Our proprietary Heterogeneous Integrated Silicon Photonics (HISP) platform sits at the core of thiswork. HISP integrates thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) heterogeneously with silicon photonics, andwe have demonstrated its performance in prototypes. This role extends that proven advantage to high-speed switching applications.

Key Responsibilities

Market and Application Understanding

  • Learn what the switching market demands, which architectures that demand is linked to, andhow our technology can improve on serving those needs.
  • Interface with business development to translate market needs into technical requirements andsteer the evolution of the HISP platform, so it stays compatible with those requirements.

Architecture and Circuit Design

  • Innovate and propose new optical circuit switches and switch architectures, and the controlcircuits that support them, to address current bottlenecks in high-speed switching.
  • Develop a system-level understanding of fast optical switching, including switching speed, insertion loss, crosstalk, and scalability trade-offs.
  • Design and analyse control-loop strategies for fast, stable switching, including bias control andcalibration schemes.

Prototyping and Demonstration

  • Design the PIC optical circuits in our HISP technology required for switchingdemonstrators.
  • Design and specify the surrounding high-speed control electronics for driving and stabilising theswitch.
  • Build prototypes and demonstrators, validate their performance, and present results to internalteams and external partners.
  • Document designs, results, and performance trends, and feed insights back into platformdevelopment.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree or above in Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 3 years of related working experience in photonics or high-speed integrated systems.
  • Experience with silicon photonics platforms (SOI, SiN) and PIC design.
  • Proficiency in photonic and waveguide simulation and integrated-circuit layout.
  • Understanding of high-speed electronics and control-loop and feedback theory for fast switching.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-moving R&D environment, and to work across theoptical, electronic, and system domains.
  • Ability to communicate in English, both written and spoken.
  • Advantageous: experience with optical switching architectures, RF and microwave design, orsystem-level modelling of communication or switching networks.

What We Offer

  • A leading role in defining a new application domain for a differentiated photonics platform.
  • The freedom to shape architecture and technology direction from the ground up, working closelywith business development on market direction.
  • Access to advanced design, prototyping, and testing facilities.
  • The opportunity to grow with a fast-scaling deep tech company.
  • Close collaboration with an experienced international R&D team.
