Research and Teaching Assistant in Oceanography Laboratory – University of Liège

The University of Liege is recruiting a full-time Research and Teaching Assistant in the fields of biological oceanography and marine ecology, supervised by Professor Sylvie Gobert with the assistance of a senior research assistant.

Approximately half of working time goes to teaching activities in both English and French, covering lectures, tutorials, practical classes and field-based practical courses for the Master’s in Oceanography, the Erasmus Mundus MER and ECT programmes, and the Bachelor’s in Biological Sciences. The postholder also contributes to the organisation and coordination of field-based practical courses, practical classes and tutorial sessions, and provides administrative and logistical support within the Master’s in Oceanography and the Erasmus Mundus MER and ECT programmes.

The remaining half of working time is devoted to scientific research leading to the completion of a PhD thesis under Professor Gobert’s supervision. The research is conducted within the framework of the STARECAPMED project and contributes to the research activities of the Oceanography Laboratory in biological oceanography and marine ecology.

Candidates need a master’s degree in biological oceanography, marine ecology or a closely related field, with the degree requirement fulfilled by the start of the appointment in October 2026. The role calls for a strong interest in academic research, teaching and service to the university, excellent communication and teaching skills in both English and French, and strong organisational and coordination skills covering the planning of courses, practical sessions, student activities and teaching schedules alongside management of educational resources and equipment. Candidates not yet proficient in French are expected to develop an adequate level within one year of appointment. A collaborative mindset, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with students from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds are required, as is being a competent swimmer who enjoys working in marine environments including field-based activities. A scientific diving certification or scuba diving qualification is considered an asset.
