The Assay team focuses on creating innovative molecular diagnostic product modules for sample processing, target isolation and detection.
The Assay team stands at the interface between samples and silicon technology helping translating biochemical variables in analytical measurements.
As our Lead Scientist, you will be leading a team of +/- 10 people (Scientists and Lab Technicians) in the Assay Design team.
You will be reporting to the Director of Assay Development.
Your main responsibilities will be:
- Lead research projects and coordinate iterative modular development of innovative molecular diagnostic modules (extraction, amplification, detection);
- Ensure effective communication with silicon chip designers and process engineers;
- Coordinate assay-hardware interface activities and integration of results;
- Design and validate methods for quality control, scale up and transfer;
- Responsible for timely delivery of work packages, data quality, SOPs, reports and safety documentation according to ISO standards;
- Lead a group of scientists and lab technicians in the Assay Team and has the ability to lead teams working in an agile set-up;
- Cascade the company priorities to the team and defines clear objectives and key results;
- Ensure the right talent is hired and supports hiring via his/her network;
- Act as a coach and promotes a growth mindset across the company;
- PhD degree in molecular biology, biochemistry or related disciplines;
- Minimum 4 years of industrial experience in biotechnology or molecular diagnostics;
- A thorough understanding of chemistries related to nucleic acids extraction on solid phases;
- Experience with molecular detection technologies (PCR, LAMP, NGS);
- Experience with mammalian, bacterial and viral cultures, extraction and nucleic acid processing;
- Experience in de novo assay design and development;
- Experience in microfluidics is a strong plus;
- Fluent in English (written and spoken);
- Ability to thrive and deliver in a fast-paced, dynamic and highly multi-tasking environment;
- Experience with IVD development and knowledge of regulatory context (IVDR and FDA) and intellectual property is required;
- Manage third party collaborations and scout for new technologies and partners;
- Capability to steer cross-functional teams working in an agile team set-up, coaching junior scientists and coordinate lab experiments performed by research assistants is mandatory;
- Cultural savvy;
- Innovative and creative mindset;
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills;
- Strong organizational skills, proactivity, scientific curiosity with keen interest in novel technologies for molecular diagnostics;
- Interaction with and support to the Project Managers;
- Expertise in design of experiment and statistical data analysis;
- Team player, enthusiastic, accurate in execution and reporting;
- Our offices are located in Leuven (Belgium). You will need to be almost daily in our offices in Leuven.
