ABOUT ECOFLEX, A SMART PROJECT

Don't say the future is uncertain, but say the future is sustainable and flexible

Renewable energy sources have the characteristic that they are highly dependent on weather conditions and consequently involve some form of variability. To cope with the variability of renewable energy sources, grid operators and market participants face significant challenges. ECOFLEX seeks to provide practical and market-based solutions to this end.

ECOFLEX (ECOsystem to leverage local FLEXibility from multi-energy and e-mobility assets for grid balancing and securing energy supply) is a research project investigating how smart energy management of energy communities and smart charging of electric vehicles can contribute to security of supply and balancing of the electricity grid. The research project is a partnership between academia (Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Ghent University), as well as industry (Flux50, Haulogie.net, Flexcity, Pluginvest, TWEED and IDETA). Within ECOFLEX, the Center for Environmental and Energy Law of Ghent University is supporting the legal dimension of the research project. The project is financed by the Energy Transition Fund of the FPS Economy.

YOUR TASKS, A SMART STEP

Do you want to conduct scientific research, but find writing a PhD a bit too much of a stretch? Then this vacancy might be something for you.
This vacancy concerns a part-time job as a scientific collaborator at an employment rate of 20%. This corresponds to a day's work, but is very flexible (both in time and space), just like renewable energy. You will work closely with the other researchers of the Center for Environmental and Energy Law and the consortium parties of ECOFLEX. You will collaborate mainly with the researchers of energy law, under the leadership of Prof. dr. Frederik Vandendriessche.
Concepts such as flexibility, demand-side management, balancing, energy management service providers,... are all central to your research. You identify and analyze the legal bottlenecks relating to the role and legal position of a new market participant, namely energy management service provider as well as the flexibility role of end users. You examine the existing market model and its shortcomings, as well as the latent opportunities within the existing legislation at regional, national and supranational level. Your legal input will undoubtedly have an important impact on the developments of a future framework on flexibility and consequently has a great social relevance. You will try to find answers to various legal and policy issues raised by the other consortium partners as well as other stakeholders. To achieve this, you will need to communicate regularly with these actors, as well as with your fellow researchers within the consortium and within the Center for Environmental and Energy Law. Publishing legal articles and giving presentations on your findings are also part of your tasks.

YOUR PROFILE, A SMART RESEARCHER

We are looking for a driven person with a talent for communication and an appetite for scientific research.

You are not afraid to collaborate with other research disciplines and you are not afraid of industrial collaboration.

You have a sharp pen and can analyze and paraphrase well.

Knowledge of English is a must, as well as knowledge of Belgian legislation.

- We offer you a fixed-term contract for a minimum period of 12 months, which can be extended up to a maximum of 2 years.
