Internship - Simulation and Model-based Systems

**Internship Position**:
The Future Project and Exploration (FPX) Team is responsible for the study, design, prototyping, and testing of enabling technologies for commercially enabled future missions.
As part of humankind’s return to the Moon, the team has been leading the early phase design of exploration systems including the ESA ISRU Demonstration Mission and ISRU Earth-Based Demonstrators, as well as a power station on the Moon ESA EL3 European Charging Station on the Moon. Model-Based Systems Engineering is being utilised to specify and design some of these systems.
Concurrently, and as part of the global efforts to reach Net Zero emissions by 2050, the team has been involved in the field of Space Based Solar Power (SBSP) in project Skybeam, a precursor to ESA’s Solaris programme. SBSP is a concept wherein extremely large satellites continuously capture the maximum amount of sun possible in space and beam it down to Earth. The team will perform a simulation of the assembly process for such satellites using models of robots that are being developed by the company.
**Location**: Sint-Stevens-Woluwe (Brussels Area)
**Duration**: 6 months
**Start date**: At the earliest
**Scope of work**:
Duties for technical internships typically include:
- Supporting the team in the implementation of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) environments and workflows in Cameo/MagicDraw for the design of Lunar exploration systems
- Supporting the team in the simulation of the assembly of an extremely large Space-Based Solar Power (SBSP) system
- Constructing behaviour tree of tiles latching logic to assemble a full structure
- Modelling the probability of malfunctions of a robot to assess the robustness of the system
- Supporting the completion of the integration of the algorithms with the simulations.
**Skills and Experience**:
The following skills and experience are required:
- Currently enrolled in a Master’s degree or relevant university program (e.g. Software, Systems, Robotics or Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science)
- Hands-on experience (university projects, professional or DIY) and a good understanding of:
- C++
- Linux environment
- Basic or advanced knowledge and understanding of:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- Systems Engineering concepts
- Self-discipline and work ethic
- Passionate with a problem-solving approach
- Excellent written and spoken English.
**Concidered as an asset**:
- Knowledge of:
- Unreal Engine or Unity3D
- Model-Based Systems Engineering
- SysML
- Cameo/MagicDraw
