The overall aim of the project is to elucidate macrophage heterogeneity and immunometabolism in Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). With the global increase in obesity and change in life style, the prevalence of MASLD has risen dramatically, currently affecting approximately over 30% of the adult population worldwide, and is predicted to become the main indication for liver transplantation by 2030. MASLD is an inflammatory disease in which crosstalk between macrophages and metabolic stimuli is crucial. In this project, the PhD student will investigate macrophage heterogeneity in the spectrum of MASLD using an integrative spatial omics approach on human biopsies, and functionally validate the findings using human ex vivo models and clinical patient samples. This project will implement a range of techniques, including state-of-the-art spatial transcriptomics, spatial proteomics, human ex vivo precision-cut tissue slices, functional cell lineage tracing, secretomics and immunohistochemistry.
This project will be a balanced blend between spatial screening methods and functional modeling to understand macrophage heterogeneity and phenotype switching in the progression of MASLD.
Key tasks- You follow a doctoral track: conducting scientific research in the domain of the defined project, completing the doctoral programme and obtaining a PhD.
- You conduct scientific research and work towards a doctorate in the field of translational liver diseases and immunometabolism.
- In addition, you provide educational support in the form of, for example, supervising master's theses and improving examinations.
- You will present information on research progress and outcomes to the Principal Investigator and colleagues overseeing the research project, and at national and international meetings.
- You will work with other researchers in a team and actively participate in collaborative research, liaising with research colleagues and support staff on day-to-day issues.

- You have obtained a Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, Medicine, Pharmacy, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Biology or a related field, with excellent results - You have a passion for science and have the commitment and motivation to pursue completion of a doctorate in four years. You have excellent spoken and written English skills. You have at least some prior training in the use of standard molecular biology techniques and cell culture. - Ability to work flexibly according to study needs
- You must be equally capable of working in a group and pursuing independent research goals, as well as an excellent communicator.
