The Department of Clinical Sciences concentrates on patient-based research, training and services in low-resource settings, with emphasis on tropical and infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS. It also runs the Medical Services of the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM).
Multi-disciplinary outbreak research is an important component of work at ITM, conducted by experts across the departments with a wide range of expertise. This includes clinical research, epidemiology, social science, diagnostic microbiology, molecular biology, health systems and policy and ecology.
We are looking for a **medical doctor** with expertise in infectious diseases and research in resource-constrained settings to strengthen clinical research on outbreaks and emerging infectious diseases, especially but not exclusively in low and middle income countries. You will be part of a core team consisting of researchers across the departments **dedicated to research on emerging infections and outbreaks**.
**Assignment**:
- You will work as a scientific fellow in the Department of Clinical Sciences and play an active role in outbreak research and research on emerging infectious diseases, in collaboration with biomedical and public health researchers.
- You will also play an active role as a member of a collaborative cross departmental group focussed on outbreak research (ORT) to find synergies across departments and units.
- You are responsible for the scientific management and coordination of our research activities in the field of epidemic-prone infectious diseases, in collaboration with other actors within and outside our institution, in low-resource countries and in Belgium/Europe.
- You will regularly perform short missions for outbreak investigation-related assignments, which may lead to the identification of research gaps and the implementation of relevant clinical research activities.
- As the outbreak project’s scientific fellow you will contribute to the management of the outbreak project which includes: project planning, coordination and implementation.
- You will elaborate and update generic research protocols and will work closely with the ITM Clinical Trials Unit to explore innovative ways to conduct clinical research during outbreaks/emergencies.
- You will join in the departmental research on evidence-based medicine and clinical decision-making, with a focus on diseases with an epidemic potential.
- You will write reports and contribute to scientific publications.
- You will contribute to the educational activities related to outbreak management provided by the department.
- You will build up and maintain a network of internal and external contacts beyond your own specialist field, including external representation of and active lobbying for ITM’s interests.
**Profile**:
- You are a medical doctor. Clinical specialisation in infectious disease, internal medicine or paediatrics or a master in tropical/infectious diseases is a strong asset. An additional specialisation in epidemiology is an asset.
- A PhD in a relevant field is an asset. You have a scientific track record, including publications, project formulation and fund raising.
- Significant field experience (> 2 yeas) in low-resource settings. Experience in epidemic preparedness and outbreak response is an asset.
- Relevant and extensive experience in clinical research and an interest in research in tropical and emerging infectious diseases.
- Quality-driven and result-orientated with robust conceptual, analytical and communicative skills.
- Flexibility to travel to low resource settings for outbreak investigation on a short-term notice.
- Team spirit and openness to multi-disciplinary interactions
- Fluency in English and French; knowledge of Dutch, Spanish or other languages is an asset
