The Trypanosoma Unit (TU) focuses on basic and applied research on African trypanosomes, aiming to contribute to the development of tools and strategies for better control and elimination of human and animal trypanosomiasis. During the last 20 years we developed a worldwide recognized leadership on the biology of trypanosome development in the tsetse fly and the mammalian host, after natural transmission by tsetse bite. The Unit is now recruiting a postdoctoral research fellow to work in a recently granted project “Tackling the livestock parasite _Trypanosoma congolense_ by targeting invariant surface proteins”. This project is embedded in a close collaboration between the Trypanosoma unit (ITM) and the Laboratory of Medical Biochemistry (University of Antwerp).
- Trypanosoma congolense_ is a tsetse fly-transmitted parasite that causes animal trypanosomiasis, a devastating livestock disease. Disease control is highly challenging due to an increasing number of drug treatment failures. The development of a functional anti-trypanosome vaccine is expected to be a true game changer. Therefore, the project aims to explore the surface antigens of this parasite and to investigate their potential as a basis for a highly protective vaccine. The research strategy is highly multi-disciplinary, requiring experts in parasitology, protein biochemistry and structural biology, immunology and bioinformatics to join forces. In this joint endeavor, we are now recruiting a postdoctoral research fellow with vast expertise in recombinant protein technology and protein structural biology. She/he will be responsible for the recombinant production of various parasite surface antigens of high quality/purity to assess their potential to elicit a neutralizing antibody response towards the parasite and to structurally characterize with a state-of-the-art approach the antibody-antigen complex and the epitopes involved.

**Assignment**:

- You will be responsible for the day-to-day execution of specific work packages of the project and will liaise with collaborators and other team members working on the project;
- You will produce recombinant parasite proteins in various recombinant expression systems and purify them through chromatographic methods;
- You will assist in the work to assess their potential to elicit neutralizing antibodies in a mouse model, i.e. that affect the parasite infection dynamics;
- You will conduct the structural characterization of the antibody-antigen complex and epitope mapping;
- You will write high quality publications for scientific journals;
- You will present research results at different levels and for different audiences;
- You will contribute to the scientific discussion and will train and supervise Master and PhD students of the team;

**Profile**:

- You hold a Master in (bio)medical sciences, biochemistry, bio-engineering or a related field in Life Sciences;
- You hold a PhD in molecular/cellular parasitology, in protein biochemistry, structural biology or a related field;
- You have a vast interest in vector-borne parasitology;
- You have expertise in recombinant protein production and purification;
- You have expertise in antibody-antigen complex characterization and epitope-typing;
- Having a FELASA-B or C certificate for animal experimental work is an asset;
- You show a high level of enthusiasm and motivation, driven by scientific curiosity;
- You have strong scientific writing and oral communication skills in English;
- You have strong organization skills;
