**1. SUMMARY**
NATO’s public diplomacy efforts serve a vital function within the Alliance by communicating its purpose and priorities to audiences worldwide. In fulfilling this role, the Public Diplomacy Division (PDD) actively strengthens NATO’s public image, thereby fostering trust in and support for the Alliance. The Division also acts as coordinator for strategic communication activities across all NATO civilian and military bodies and commands.
The Communications Services (COM) Section, PDD’s digital outreach team, enables PDD to take a landscape approach to digital communication, including the strategic conception, acquisition, production, management, marketing and distribution of multimedia content to engage the Alliance’s audiences in NATO missions, events, operations and activities. PDD-COM comprises two interlinked teams that manage, respectively: content planning, creation and marketing; and NATO’s communication platforms and infrastructure, to include NATO’s broadcast operations and the NATO website.
The Head of Web Editorial helms the team responsible for engaging NATO’s audiences through NATO.int. S/he is a sharp digital communicator who can build a coherent and compelling user journey. An experienced web editor with knowledge of UX, visual storytelling, data visualisation and social media integration, s/he leads web editorial projects, including conceptualising, researching and drafting web content for both dynamic and evergreen portions of the site. The incumbent provides professional advice related to digital communication and participates in the team’s normative work.
The Head of Web Editorial reports to the Principal Editor/Head PDD-COM Editorial Services under the overall direction of the Head, PDD-COM.
**2. QUALIFICATIONS **AND **EXPERIENCE**
**ESSENTIAL**
The incumbent must:
- have a University degree or equivalent level qualification in communication, political science, international relations, or another discipline related to NATO’s work;
- have at least five years’ professional experience in conception, planning, management, development and assessment of content for digital platforms, especially web; preferably in an international environment
- have experience in a managerial role for a small team;
- have experience with oversight of an editorial programme;
- demonstrate sound political judgment and excellent analytical and conceptual skills to translate strategy into creative, digital-first, multiplatform communication;
- have superior web editorial and drafting skills and excellent oral and written communication skills;
- have the ability to conceptualise a full and rich user journey, developing wholly realised projects that cut across platforms and channels;
- possess a keen interest in and very good knowledge of international political affairs and security issues;
- possess a high level of digital fluency, with extensive experience handling the range of file formats suitable for web;
- possess the following minimum levels of NATO’s official languages (English/French): V (“Advanced”) in one; III (“Intermediate”) in the other.
**DESIRABLE**
The following would be considered an advantage:
- experience in the development of communication strategies;
- experience inputting into and drafting reports;
- experience in project oversight and (public) procurement procedures and market consultations;
- experience generating marketing plans that will optimise distribution of, findability of, use of, and interaction with web content through such technology as SEO and UTM coding and tracking;
- experience with web content management systems;
- knowledge of another NATO member or Partner language;
**3. **MAIN **ACCOUNTABILITIES**
**Expertise Development**
Communicate NATO’s evolving agenda to increase public understanding of and support for NATO. Define and develop web-based communication, in the context of NATO’s communications strategy and digital communication programme writ large. Conceptualise, research, draft and lead web editorial projects designed to engage NATO’s target audiences and advance its communication objectives.
**Information Management**
Keep abreast of political developments to ensure accuracy and currency of the NATO.int website. Create, maintain and enhance robust professional networks to promote the smooth flow of information and meet challenges associated with communication about political issues. Coordinate internal briefings for the PDD-COM team on political developments.
**Knowledge Management**
Act as steward for NATO web editorial style guide. Make appropriate, effective contributions to NATO’s communications guidance, plans and assessments.
**People Management**
