**YOUR TASKS**
You will work in the Department of Geology (Faculty of Sciences) within the BELSPO RV New Belgica funded project “Towards 3D TURbidity by correlating multiBEAM sonar and in-situ Sensor data (TURBEAMS)” which is a collaboration between the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ), the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences and Ghent University. The objective of this project is to estimate the turbidity and suspended particular matter (SPM) in the sea water columns using backscatter values from multibeam sonars. As a researcher at Ghent University, you will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Investigating the relation between multibeam data and in-situ turbidity and SPM data using data-driven predictive modelling, machine learning and classification techniques accounting for the expected spatial correlation in the multibeam acoustic data;
- Developing an adapted data processing workflow in Python to predict in-situ turbidity from multibeam data using the identified relationship
**WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR**
- You hold a Master’s degree or a thesis-based doctorate in Geology, Earth Sciences, Marine and Ocean Sciences, Engineering or equivalent and have at least three years of experience in the above-mentioned domain;
- You have experience with the acquisition, processing and interpretation of multibeam water column sonar data;
- You have experience in the development of machine learning and predictive modelling techniques
- You have programming skills in C++, Python or equivalent;
- You are fluent in English;
**WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU**
- We offer you a contract of definite duration for a period of three months.
- Your contract will start on 1/03/2023 at the earliest.
- Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale WM1 to WM4 (if you hold a Master’s degree) or salary scale PD1 to PD4 (if you hold a doctorate). Click here for more information about our salary scales.
