**We’re looking for a Europe Legal Director, to reinforce the team in our Brussels office**
The key purpose of the Legal Director, Europe is to be a trusted partner to the leadership of the Europe Business Unit (the “Business Unit”) by leading the Business Unit Legal team and providing proactive and strategic legal support, guidance and leadership which protects the interests of the Business Unit and enables them to grow sustainably and operate with an acceptable risk profile.
The Legal Director is responsible for leading on the provision and enablement of effective and value add legal, commercial contracts, regulatory compliance, risk management & assurance and ethics & governance support which is aligned to the sustainable achievement of Business Unit strategic priorities.
The role holder will be a key and senior member of the UK&E Legal team and will work closely and collaboratively with the Business Unit MD and their senior management team and colleagues in the wider Business Unit.
This is a role which is necessary to lead on and be accountable for the provision of legal, commercial contracts, regulatory compliance, risk management & assurance and ethics & governance support to the Business Unit throughout the contract lifecycle in order to protect the interests of the Business Unit and enable sustainable achievement of the Business Unit’s strategic priorities.
Reports to the UK&E General Counsel and works closely with the Business Unit MD and their senior leadership team. The role will require a visible presence and strong relationship with the Business Unit leadership team and relevant country/contract managers and bid teams across the Business Unit

Main Responsibilities
- Provide strategic, proactive and visible leadership and legal, commercial contracts and risk management expertise to the Business Unit enabling the execution and sustainable achievement of the Business Unit strategic objectives with an acceptable risk profile.
- Lead on the delivery to the Business Unit of specialist legal, regulatory compliance, risk management & assurance and ethics & governance support and guidance working with internal colleagues and external counsel, as appropriate.
- Lead, develop and motivate a highly engaged team of legal professionals, nurturing and developing the talent and capability in that team.
- Prominent and visible ‘go to’ person for business focused legal advice and guidance on complex and strategic commercial and contractual issues, negotiations, transactions and structures.
- Strategic oversight and direction to bid teams on legal, contractual and risk aspects of bids including assurance of contract reviews, risk assessments and other legal and contractual aspects of bidding.
- Ensure awareness and understanding of relevant legal, policy, regulatory, risk & assurance, and ethics & governance requirements within the Business Unit and work with colleagues in the wider UK&E and Group Legal functions to develop and embed compliance and risk mitigation plans, processes and tools which provide ongoing assurance.
- Proactively identify changes and developments in relevant laws, regulations, government policies and guidance notes and work with colleagues to assess and manage their impact on the Business Unit.
- Lead and work in conjunction with colleagues in the Group Co Sec team on effective delivery of legal entity & corporate governance and company secretarial services in relation to legal entities and boards and committees within the Business Unit.
- Legal instruction, oversight and guidance in relation to internal and external corporate investigations into matters arising within the Business Unit.
- Develop, enhance and embed strategies, policies, procedures and ways of working which enhance the efficacy and efficiency of legal advice, support and risk management across the Business Unit and throughout the business lifecycle.
- Management of relationships with external legal providers and sourcing
