The European Climate Foundation (ECF) is a major philanthropic initiative working to help tackle the climate crisis by fostering the development of a net-zero emission society at the national, European, and global level.
We support around 1000 partner organisations to carry out activities that drive urgent and ambitious policy in support of the objectives of the Paris Agreement, contribute to the public debate on climate action and help deliver a socially responsible transition to a net-zero economy and sustainable society in Europe and around the world.
The ECF brings together diverse perspectives and backgrounds to find the best innovative solutions to tackle climate change. We are focusing on engaging and hiring great people from a wide diversity of backgrounds to strengthen the cause.

About the role
As the Strategic Communications Consultant on Climate Finance, you will be part of the ECF’s Strategic Communications Team, which is the outreach unit of the Foundation. The team acts as a centre of expertise on climate communications and seeks to help create more political, media and public endorsement for action on climate change at an international, European and sectoral level, focused on aligning financial flows with the Paris Agreement.
The communications team delivers strategic advice, communications and outreach services to ECF programs and grantees and helps build strategic communications capacity in the wider climate community. This role will support the ECF programme on Climate Finance and its grantees with the development of media narratives, strategic communications plans and tactics seeking to incentivize a wide range of financial actors to embark on a transformational shift in the way the financial system works towards the transition and reallocation of financial flows from unsustainable to net zero investments.
We are looking for a smart, dynamic and insightful person who can bring together a wide variety of partners around a common strategy aimed to shift the narrative and impact around how net zero finance can support the transition in Europe and globally as well as to promote targeted demands relating to complex issues and mechanisms. You'll need to be a great communicator with excellent understanding of how to express complex matters in simple terms and identify strategic communication pathways to create political impact.
You’ll need to be a self-starter, with a proven interest in climate finance narratives and a minimum understanding of how public and private financial systems work. You'll be working as part of a fast-paced, European team that operates across a multi-stakeholder group of grantees, in multiple media markets and multiple platforms.
This role would suit someone with a background as a journalist, communication consultant, investor relations, communications expert in industry associations and/or public affairs with experience in financial sector coverage and/or sustainable finance. If you think this sounds like you, please apply
Key responsibilities
Reporting to the Strategic Communications Director, and in close collaboration with the ECF Climate Finance programme team, the Climate Finance Strategic Communications Consultant, will be responsible for:
- Tracking political, public and media debates around how sustainable finance can support the net zero transition in Europe, spotting opportunities as well as developing and implementing communications strategies to influence and shift these debates;
- Accompanying the work of the ECF’s Climate Finance programme and initiatives to ensure a communications perspective is injected across all stages of strategic decision-making;
- Working with a wide spectrum of internal and external partners to turn strategy into relevant briefs, workable campaigns and develop effective communications plans around political moments;
- Developing and maintaining a diverse network of partners and contacts across sectors: academia, corporates, financial sector (banks, investors), industry associations, non-profit;
- Developing and maintaining relationships with key correspondents and editors in mainstream and specialist media;
- Developing structures and approaches that can react quickly to emerging opportunities and changes in the external context;
- Making full use of new and innovative methods of digital communications work to disseminate messages and raise awareness of ECF-supported initiatives and outputs;
- Working hand-in-hand with an international network of communications experts who seek to advance the momentum of the low carbon transition.

- At least 8 years’ experience in finance, economics, financial public relations, journalism or a related field;
