Global PhD Partnerships KU Leuven-University of Melbourne: A joint experimental/numerical study of hydrogen combustion in reciprocating engines
KU Leuven is an autonomous university. It was founded in 1425 and has grown within the Catholic tradition.
At the division of Applied Mechanics and Energy Conversion (TME) of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at KU Leuven, the LowCarb Research group led by Asst. Prof. Joshua Lacey focuses on the decarbonization of industrial processes, including characterizing thermal-fluid processes that utilize alternative fuels such as hydrogen.
At the University of Melbourne, the Combustion CFD group led by Associate Professor Mohsen Talei develops predictive tools for cleaner gas turbines and reciprocating engines using high-performance computing (HPC) to conduct simulations related to the combustion of alternative fuels such as hydrogen and biomethane.
Hydrogen is a promising fuel for energy decarbonization, particularly for reciprocating engine applications. The use of directly-injected (DI) hydrogen presents opportunities to induce charge stratification and avoid abnormal combustion events. A comprehensive characterization of hydrogen combustion phenomena requires a combined approach of experiments and simulations to resolve the interconnected chemical and hydrodynamic processes in the combustion chamber. The selected students will undertake these activities within two complementary research groups in Belgium and Australia, spending time at both institutions and sharing knowledge between their respective research teams.
Profile
The candidates should have:
- A Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- Strong English communication skills for presenting results in meetings, conferences, and journals.
- Flexibility and good time management skills.
- The ability to work autonomously and collaboratively with supervisors.
- Skills for conducting experiments, processing measurements, and performing detailed computational fluid dynamics simulations.
- Experience in organizing workshops and events.
- The ability to report research progress to supervisors regularly.
- A willingness to engage in teaching assignments.
- A willingness to travel between Belgium and Australia for this PhD opportunity.
