**YOUR TASKS**
- BLUEGent is seeking a passionate** scientific collaborator** to support our activities in the area of marine and coastal Nature-based Solutions. The open position is linked to the Chair: “**Nature-based Solutions for Coastal Resilience**” (Promotor: Prof. Colin Janssen; Chair holder: Prof. Margriet Drouillon). The Chair Nature-based Solutions for Coastal Resilience ambitions to advance the trust in and the adoption of marine and coastal Nature-based Solutions. The scientific focus of the Chair is to increase our understanding of the cost efficiency of marine and coastal Nature-based Solutions, in order to facilitate the large-scale implementation of marine and coastal Nature-based Solutions as alternatives or (an) addition(s) to conventional grey coastal protection measures.
**Key Responsibilities**
- The scientific collaborator will be responsible for two main lines of work:
(1) **literature review**: consolidating the state-of-the-art on marine and coastal Nature-based Solutions
- (2) **communicating** the results of the literature review to different stakeholder groups in an objective yet engaging way. This may include topics or aspects related to coastal engineering, to carbon sequestration, biodiversity, nutrient cycling and ecosystem services at large, as well as bio-economy and financing of large scale pilot projects in an ocean-related setting.
**Key Tasks**
- **Literature review**: Conduct a comprehensive review of existing literature and case studies on marine and coastal Nature-based Solutions, focusing on their performance, design, implementation and results from cost-benefit analyses.
- **Development of a practitioners guide**: Contribute to the development of a guide for practitioners, providing recommendations for the design, implementation, evaluation, and cost-benefit analysis of marine and coastal Nature-based Solutions.
- **Stakeholder engagement**: Communicate and collaborate with researchers, practitioners, policy makers, business experts, and representatives of local communities, to foster knowledge exchange, and to promote the adoption of marine and coastal Nature-based Solutions.
- **Research agenda**: Assist in developing a long-term research agenda for marine and coastal Nature-based Solutions, identifying key research priorities and areas for collaboration.
- Supporting activities may consist of
- Conducting interviews with stakeholders to validate and advance data and understanding of barriers and drivers to the mainstreaming of marine and coastal Nature-based solutions.
- Preparing and presenting the conclusions of literature reviews in a comprehensive way, both for oral and written communication. In particular, visually engaging communication will be important.
- Supporting the Promotor and the Chairholder of the Chair Nature-based Solutions for coastal resilience.
**Required attributes**
- You hold a Master's degree or Ph.D. in one of the following fields: Bio-engineering, Civil Engineering, Business Engineering, Applied Economics or Marine Biology. Experience in the field of coastal resilience, ecosystem services and/or Nature-based Solutions in a terrestrial or urban setting is a plus.
- Excellent communication skills, both in person as well as in writing. In particular, English writing skills are important. Ideally you are proficient in both academic and popular writing styles. Excellent written and verbal communication in Dutch is an asset.
- You are flexible, able to work independently and as part of a transdisciplinary team.
- Willingness to travel abroad for short periods.
**Desirable attributes**
- Strong analytical skills and proficiency in statistical analysis and data visualization.
- Experience with GIS and remote sensing technologies.
- Willingness to learn financial and economic techniques, with the aim to evaluate Nature-based Solutions from economic, sustainability and risk mitigation perspective.
