YOUR TASKS
- Your role will consist out of managerial and scientific elaboration in multiple research projects, e.g., data collection, methodological advancements, organizing of consortium partner meetings, etc. The research projects were you will be involved in are described in short below:
- Map4Plastics is a VLAIO funded project that maps currently unrecycled plastic streams in Flanders and neighboring regions, identifying where plastics are lost, why they are not recycled, and which circular routes can realistically close these gaps. Through detailed data gathering, stakeholder input, and multi‑factor assessments, the project highlights the most promising circular solutions and develops two business cases supported by LCA and TEA. Your task is to contribute to the environmental assessment of innovative circular routes for these unrecycled plastics;
- SWIFT project: This is a VLAIO funded project focusing on improving the environmental sustainability of industrial pre-treatment processes for hemp and flax through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). It compares newly developed, more sustainable pre-treatment methods with current state-of-the-art processes. Your task is to perform the sustainability and LCA evaluation of existing and newly developed hemp and flax pre-treatment processes;
- Support in other research projects and assist in the preparation of new project proposals;
- At least 70% of your assignment will be spent on academic research;
- Given the multidisciplinary nature of the research, cooperation and exchange within the STEN group and with other partners in the projects will be central;
- Support the writing of reports, scientific articles and dissemination of results (e.g. conferences). WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- You hold a Master’s degree in environmental engineering, bioscience engineering, chemical engineering, environmental science, environmental technology or equivalent. The degree requirements must be met at the start of the appointment;
- You have an interest in scientific research and can show specific scientific experience in areas relevant for the abovementioned projects;
- You have solid experience conducting quantitative and/or qualitative research;
- You can operate both independently and in a multidisciplinary team;
- You have organisational/managerial skills and are highly motivated;
- You have good writing and presentation skills;
- You master the Dutch and English language, written and orally, in an academic context;
- Additional plus points:
- You have experience with MFA and good understanding of relevant material properties and processing technologies;
- You are familiar with circular economy assessment methods;
- You have experience with LCA software such as openLCA, Gabi, SimaPro, etc. and LCI databases (e.g. ecoinvent, PSILCA);
- You have experience with the development and comparison of different value chain scenarios. WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

- Your contract will start on 1/04/2026 at the earliest.
