Freelance Data Engineer – Spark / Azure / DatabricksLocation: Brussels (Hybrid, 2 days onsite) Start: Early December or January Duration: 1 year potential Language: English (French a strong plus)Project OverviewA leading data-driven organisation is seeking an experienced Data Engineer to strengthen its data platform team. The project focuses on building and optimising large-scale data products in Azure using Databricks and Apache Spark, with data sourced from multiple countries and retail partners. The role involves working closely with product owners and internal stakeholders to enhance performance, control costs, and ensure the delivery of reliable KPIs and insights.Key ResponsibilitiesDesign, build, and maintain Spark-based data pipelines in Azure Databricks.Optimise Spark performance and cost efficiency across distributed workloads.Contribute to the development of data products supporting sales and operational KPIs from multiple European markets.Collaborate with cross-functional teams (data engineers, analysts, product owners) to align delivery with business goals.Implement CI/CD practices, version control (Git), and scalable data structures (e.g., Data Vault).Support ongoing migration and automation initiatives, including ML and ETL pipeline improvements.Tech StackCore: Apache Spark, Databricks, Azure Data FactoryLanguages: Python, SQLVersion Control / DevOps: Git, CI/CDDatabases: MySQL, PostgreSQL (nice to have)Other Tools: DBT (internal adaptation)Required Skills & ExperienceProven expertise in Spark optimisation (performance tuning, cluster configuration, cost reduction).Solid understanding of data engineering principles, data modelling, and scalable architecture.Strong Python and Git experience.Excellent communication with internal stakeholders and product teams.Hands-on mindset — able to assess what can be accelerated vs. what needs refinement.
