Why This Role Matters

Our client’s Office of the CISO is on a mission to elevate its cybersecurity maturity and resilience. As an Expert Cybersecurity Assessment professional, you will provide an independent, ISO 27001-based evaluation of the organization’s Information Security Management System (ISMS). Your insights will directly inform executive decisions, drive strategic improvements, and safeguard critical infrastructure. The stakes are high: your work will influence national security priorities and set the standard for future cyber resilience.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Lead a comprehensive assessment of the current cybersecurity posture and ISMS maturity, grounded in ISO 27001 standards.
• Organize and facilitate interviews and workshops with key stakeholders across IT, security, and business domains.
• Evaluate existing policies, procedures, and technical controls for alignment with ISO 27001 Annex A controls.
• Identify and document gaps, perform risk-based prioritization, and conduct a detailed gap analysis against ISO 27001 requirements.
• Develop a substantiated improvement plan and actionable roadmap, tailored to the organization’s context and risk profile.
• Produce clear, concise, and executive-ready reports, including a risk and priority matrix, and an executive summary for CISO and management.
• Present findings and recommendations to the CISO and relevant stakeholders, ensuring clarity and actionable outcomes.
• Transfer knowledge and best practices to the CISO’s team, ensuring sustainability beyond the mission’s duration.

What We’re Looking For

• Proven expertise in risk analysis and management within an ISMS framework (ISO 27005 or equivalent).
• Demonstrated ability to develop substantiated, practical improvement plans and roadmaps for complex organizations.
• Exceptional facilitation skills: able to conduct interviews and workshops with diverse technical and business stakeholders.
• Deep experience in conducting cybersecurity/ISMS assessments, including gap analysis and maturity evaluation based on ISO 27001.
• Outstanding communication skills: able to report clearly and concisely to CISO and management, even under tight deadlines.
• Ownership mindset: you drive outcomes, take initiative, and deliver impact that lasts.
• Collaborative spirit: you thrive in cross-functional teams and foster knowledge sharing.

Technical Skills & Knowledge Domains

• Expert knowledge of ISO 27001/27002 (ISMS, Annex A controls), information security, and GRC.
• Risk management and risk assessment methodologies (e.g., ISO 27005).
• Broad understanding of NIS 2 and GDPR regulatory frameworks.
• Assessment and audit methodologies; benchmarking against sector standards.
• Proficiency in developing executive-level reports and actionable recommendations.

Language Proficiency

• Fluency in Dutch or French required.
• Bilingualism (Dutch/French) is a strong asset.
• Professional proficiency in English required.

Other Requirements

• Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience in information security or related field.
• Relevant certifications are a plus (e.g., ISO 27001 Lead Auditor/Lead Implementer, CISSP, CISA, CISM).
• Experience working at SFIA level 5 or above (ensure, advise – senior/expert level).
• Ability to work both on-site in Brussels and remotely, as per project needs.
• Availability for a full-time, freelance mission of approximately 3 months.
