Freelance Solution Architect – Automation Program (Belgium) For one of our clients, we are looking for an experienced freelance Solution Architect to lead the design of a large-scale document automation transformation combining Intelligent Document Processing (IDP), workflow automation, orchestration platforms, and legacy system coexistence. This is a hands-on architectural leadership role, not a business-analyst or delivery-execution position. You'll shape the target architecture, not run day-to-day operations. 🎯
What you'll do
Map the current ("As-Is") document processing landscape across business and IT Design the future ("To-Be") automation architecture — API-first, event-driven, provider-neutral Define the transition roadmap: what to retain, modernize, replace, or retire Align AI/IDP capabilities with workflow automation and orchestration platforms Coordinate architecture across multiple vendors and delivery teams Define non-functional requirements (security, scalability, resilience, auditability) Produce architecture documentation, ADRs, and integration specs for handover ✅ What we're looking for 5+ years as a Solution/Technical/Transformation Architect on complex digital transformation programs Proven experience integrating document processing with workflow, BPM, or orchestration platforms Strong background in API-first, event-driven, SOA integration design Experience defining transition architectures and phased legacy modernization Multi-vendor coordination experience — comfortable challenging multiple providers Track record producing ADRs, architecture principles, and solution design docs Working knowledge of GDPR, NIS2, and auditability requirements Professional English required; French and/or Dutch a strong asset (Belgian market) ⭐ Nice to have AWS (or other hyperscaler) cloud architecture, incl. AI/ML services ECM/EDM experience (repositories, metadata, retention, legal archiving) Views on RPA — when to use it, and how to reduce dependency over time Mainframe/iSeries coexistence and decoupling experience TOGAF/ArchiMate certification and EA repository management Belgian healthcare, mutual insurance, or claims/reimbursement sector experience Familiarity with AI governance and EU AI Act implications 📍 Setup: Freelance / consultant engagement, Belgium 📩 Interested or know someone who fits?
