Location:
Leuven, Belgium *(Hybrid – 1 day/week onsite in Leuven, remaining days from Hasselt, Ghent or Antwerp)
* đź“… Contract: Fulltime/ Freelance with Initial 12 months with possible extension At NextChain Solutions , we are looking for an experienced Senior Database Architect to join a business-critical database modernization project for a leading healthcare technology environment. This role focuses on migrating a large multi-terabyte database landscape from Sybase ASE to PostgreSQL , ensuring high availability, scalability, performance, and data integrity throughout the migration journey.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement PostgreSQL database architecture
- Lead large-scale database migration initiatives
- Optimize database performance, indexing, partitioning, and query execution
- Support migration planning, validation, and cutover activities
- Translate complex Sybase ASE / T-SQL patterns into PostgreSQL
- Ensure scalability, reliability, and high availability
- Develop automation for database administration and monitoring
- Troubleshoot complex database performance issues
- Provide technical leadership and coach other engineers Required Skills
- Strong hands-on PostgreSQL architecture and administration experience
- PostgreSQL performance tuning and query optimization
- Database indexing and partitioning
- Experience with large-scale database migrations
- SQL optimization and database troubleshooting
- Linux / Unix administration
- Shell scripting
- Database automation
- Experience working with business-critical production environments Nice to Have
- Sybase ASE
- T-SQL migration to PostgreSQL
- Multi-terabyte database environments
- PostgreSQL extensions (pg\_logical, pg\_vector)
- Java application environments
- Healthcare or other highly regulated industries What We're Looking For
- 8+ years of experience as a Database Architect or Senior DBA
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
- Hands-on technical mindset
- Experience leading complex migration projects
- Ability to mentor and guide technical teams
