Legal Counsel Private Banking

Context As a Legal Counsel in Private Banking, you will play a pivotal role within the Legal Department, forming part of a dedicated team focused on supporting all legal aspects of Private Banking activities. While Private Banking will be a key area of focus, this is a broad, generalist in‑house legal role that also offers the opportunity to work on a variety of matters beyond Private Banking, including corporate transactions, financial markets, private equity, and other strategic initiatives. You will provide expert, pragmatic legal guidance across a wide range of products and services, working in close partnership with Private Banking teams, Compliance, and other key support functions. This position is ideal for someone with a strong interest in Private Banking who is also eager and at ease to take on diverse legal challenges across the business. Your position Legal Advisory for Private Banking: Provide pragmatic and solution‑oriented legal advice on a broad range of Private Banking products and services, including investment mandates (discretionary and advisory), structured products, private equity and wealth management solutions. Legal Support for Internal Functions: Advise and support all relevant internal functions—including Compliance, Risk, Credit, Facility, Marketing, and others—on legal and regulatory matters affecting the bank’s overall operations, ensuring coordinated and business‑oriented solutions. Regulatory & Compliance Support: Assist the business in navigating and complying with relevant Belgian and European regulations (such as MiFID II, AML/CTF, PRIIPs, PSD, ESG), and support communications with supervisory authorities (FSMA, NBB). Contracts & Documentation: Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of legal and contractual documentation, including client‑facing documents, terms and conditions, and distribution agreements. Strategic Projects: Provide legal insight and support for new product launches, strategic initiatives, and projects within Private Banking. Involvement from inception to implementation to help ensure innovative solutions are delivered with sound legal foundations. Broader Legal Exposure: Contribute potentially to legal work beyond Private Banking, including corporate transactions, financial markets, private equity, and other strategic matters, offering a unique opportunity to develop as a well‑rounded in‑house counsel. Data Protection & IT: Support files related to data protection, IT, and outsourcing contracts, in close collaboration with the Group Data Protection Officer. Claims & Disputes: Follow up on claims and litigation files arising from Banking activities. Knowledge Sharing & Training: Monitor relevant legal developments related to banking, financial, civil, general commercial law issues, and organize internal training sessions for Private Banking and support function colleagues. Collaboration: Work closely with colleagues from Legal, Compliance, Risk, Private Banking, and all relevant support functions to identify and mitigate legal risks. Your profile Master’s degree in Belgian law. 4-6 years of relevant experience as a legal counsel within a financial institution or law firm, with a clear focus or strong interest in banking & finance, ideally Private Banking. Experience with data protection, IT, and outsourcing contracts in the banking sector is a plus. Fluent in Dutch or French, with a good command of the other national language; excellent command of English. Analytical, business‑minded, objective, and accountable. Able to translate complex legal matters into clear, actionable advice. Eager to learn, flexible, and able to handle a broad range of topics. Team player with strong communication and interpersonal skills. Able to work autonomously, process‑oriented, and well‑organized. Proficient in Microsoft Office.
