Campaigns and Policy Director (Consultancy)
SUMMARY OF ROLE
People vs Big Tech is looking for an experienced Campaigns and Policy Director to lead on developing and executing "movement campaign actions" that aim to increase the accountability of Big Tech in Europe. The role will have 3 primary functions – a) building civil society power through outreach and onboarding of new organisations into the Big Tech accountability movement in Europe b) supporting the movement to carry out high visibility public campaigns to support our strategic goals and 2025 Action Plan - including rapid response campaigns and c) following EU policy developments closely and translating policy opportunities into creative campaign actions that can engage and mobilise civil society across different sectors and countries in Europe.
The Campaigns and Policy Director will run until 31st December between 2-4 days a week at a day rate of up to ₤320 p/d (compensation based on seniority, experience and location). The role is fully remote and should be undertaken by someone in a Europe-friendly timezone. It will require occasional travel, particularly to Brussels. This is an exciting role at the heart of a growing Big Tech accountability movement in Europe, bringing together organisations and people to build our collective power. There is a strong likelihood of continued funding which would allow continuation of the role into 2026.
ABOUT PEOPLE VS BIG TECH
People vs Big Tech is an open movement of civil society organisations and concerned citizens working together to challenge the power and abuses of Big Tech. Our first major priority is to ensure today's tech titans and their legions of lobbyists are not allowed to be the dominant designers of tomorrow's technology regulations. Our current focus is to distill key enforcement priorities in European regulation, highlight moments for targeted action, and amplify opportunities anywhere for people-powered mobilisation in the fight to increase public and political support for Big Tech accountability.
Set up in June 2021, we have fought hard and helped to secure major legislative victories in the Digital Services Act, supported Nobel Laureates Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov to develop a 10-Point Plan to address our information crisis and coordinated rapid response actions again when we see governments and Big Tech companies threatening to trample on people's rights. We are a decentralised movement united by our founding Declaration was co-created by 35 organisations.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Engage in direct advocacy with EU institutions (Commission, Parliament, Council) to ensure our campaign priorities and policy recommendations influence decision makers;
- Identify policy development needs for People vs Big Tech (PvBT) in consultation with the network and lead on policy development for PvBT network, working with partners, contractors and consultants to ensure these needs are filled;
- Devise and implement EU advocacy strategies in line with PvBT 2025 Action Plan;
- Identify opportunities for movement-wide campaigns and support the movement to carry out high visibility public campaigns to support our strategic goals and the 2025 Action Plan, including rapid response campaigns;
- Develop and implement creative campaign strategies in relation to DSA and DMA enforcement and the development of the Digital Fairness Act, in line with the PvBT 2025 Action Plan, that can engage and mobilise civil society across different sectors and countries in Europe;
- Identify communications and research needs for campaigns and work with partners, contractors and consultants to ensure these needs are filled;
- Build the capacity of the movement (including youth movement) on key policy issues;
- Provide updates to the PvBT movement, funders and other relevant stakeholders on EU policy developments when needed;
- Chair policy and campaign calls with members of the network and supporting organisations to align around policy positions and campaign strategy;
- Deputise for the Interim Executive Director as necessary.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
We know that no one can possibly have all these skills and experiences - you will likely be able to bring 75% of the following;
- At least five years of experience in campaigning and movement building in one or more issue areas
- Experience of bridging between technical experts, political insiders, creative campaigners, and people working at the grassroots, in guiding inclusive and impactful collective action
- Excellent communications and people skills, with experience of working with a diverse range of people and willing to acknowledge and unlearn biases
- A confident and effective self-starter, able to work independently and creatively in line with a set strategy
- Demonstrated experience engaging and mobilising the public on complex issues
- Strong project management skills and a high degree of comfort working in a fast-moving environment
- Strong writing and briefing skills in English including the ability to simplify complex messages for campaigns
- Positive attitude, adaptability, and the ability to think creatively
- Experience and ability managing a network of agencies and vendors and ensuring the delivery of high-quality work
- Experience working on issues related to digital rights and tech justice and/or ability to think critically about how we achieve strong tech regulation in Europe
- Fluency in one or more major European languages other than English
