Eurometaux is the trade association representing the collective European non-ferrous metals industry, including miners, smelters, refiners, fabricators and recyclers. The industry employs 500,000 people across over 900 facilities, with an annual turnover of €120bn.

Metals: supplying Europe'senergy and digital transition
Metals will play a central role insuccessfully building Europe's cleantechnology value chains and meetingthe EU's 2050 climate-neutrality goal. Inthe wake of supply disruptions from theCOVID-19 pandemic and Russia's conflictin Ukraine, Europe's lack of resilience forits growing metals needs has become astrategic concern.
The global energy transition is metalintensive. Electric vehicles, batteries, solarphotovoltaic systems, wind turbines,and hydrogen technologies all requiresignificantly more metals than theirconventional alternatives to replace fossil
Europe's plans to establish domesticproduction for clean energy technologieswill increase its demand for a wide rangeof metals. This includes growth in maturebase metals markets (aluminium, copper,nickel) and the initiation of new commoditymarkets (lithium, rare earth elements).
Europe has a window of opportunity tolay the foundation for a higher level ofstrategic autonomy and sustainabilityfor its strategic metals through optimised
recycling, domestic value chaininvestment, and more active globalsourcing. However, firm action is neededto avoid bottlenecks for several materialsthat risk being in global short supply at theend of this decade.
The faster Europe decarbonises, thehigher its metals requirements. Ourindustry has the ambition to supply moreof the metals that Europe needs for itsbatteries, renewable energy technologies,and grids – at the same time asdecarbonising, recycling more, andcontinually lowering our environmentalfootprint. Achieving this ambition requirespolicy, uniting all policy areas to help ourcompanies compete globally.

Guy Thiran has led Eurometaux successfullyas Director General for many years but willbe retiring later in 2024. Hence, the Boardof Eurometaux is looking to appoint a firstclass successor with strong persuasion and diplomacy skills to broker alignment betweenmultiple stakeholders. The new DG must alsobe a great advocate and communicator,who can articulate and promote a vision forEurometaux and the non-ferrous metals sector.The DG plays a key role at the heart of the twin transition,representing a sector which is critical for the EU's renewableenergy, digital, space and defence objectives.
The DG is supported by a team of around 20 experts, boundby a common mission to foster a thriving metals industry.
Eurometaux is located in a bright, modern office
Required Experience for the new DG:
– Strong experience in leadership roles which includedpolicy advocacy on behalf of a company or a tradeassociation with demonstrable policy outcomes.
– Senior figure with 10 to 15 years minimum relevant experience, including extensive interaction with EU institutions.
– Proven experience in managing teams with agrowth of unit/team and its individuals.
– Setting and implementing a strategic vision for anorganisation's policy agenda (for example linked to thetwin transition or EU industrial policy), and guidance toteam members to reach common policy objectives.
– Financial acumen and experience managing budgets.
– Experience in the metals industry and/or relatedpolicy areas would be advantageous.
