YOUR TASKS

  • At least 70% of your assignment will be spent on academic research.
  • Within the Department of History, Prof. Lieve Van Hoof is currently directing a project on
    "Responsive governance and population wellbeing in later Antiquity (3rd 5th c.)", cofinanced by the Research Foundation
  • Flanders and the National Research Foundation
  • South Africa. In dialogue with the PI, you are responsible for the analysis of government involvement in population wellbeing in the later Roman Empire, taking your starting point from the postTheodosian Novellae and other relevant sources. You support the PI in research on the role and impact of responsive governance on government involvement in population wellbeing. In addition, you actively contribute to the collaboration of the Flemish and South-African teams, and together with the PI in Ghent and the South-African team, you are responsible for organising a team workshop in Ghent, as well as an international conference in South-Africa. To a lesser extent, you also take up wider responsibilities, e.g. by contributing to teaching.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a thesisbased doctorate (obtained max. 6 years ago. This term of 6 years is determined by the date written on the abovementioned required diploma).
  • You have a good knowledge of Latin and Ancient Greek, and expertise in the field of Late Antiquity. You are a team player but can work independently. You are willing to take up responsibilities within the Ghent team, as well as to collaborate with the South-African team. Experience with organising academic events is a plus.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a contract of indefinite duration with a maximum term of 22 months._ _
  • Your contract will start on 1/10/2024 at the earliest.
