Goal of the internship:
The goal of this internship is to help us with the development and implementation of Algorithms to automatically evaluate Design-for-Assembly rules on a 3D geometry of the product within a CAD software tool.
In this way you will contribute to the Flanders Make DFATool code library which is used in multiple research projects.
Many companies do not take assembly aspects of a product into account during the early design process.This often results in designs that are optimal from a performance point of view, but are hard or impossible to assemble.
This leads to numerous design iterations between design and production departments causing significant development costs._ Design for Assembly (DFA) rules_ are metrics that express the 'ease of assembly' of a product and can be evaluated during the design phase of a product in a
_CAD software_. The accuracy and computation time of these rules strongly depends on the level of detail in which the assembly process is described.
_Making the right trade-off between accuracy and computation time is often the most challenging aspect of assemblability estimation._
The easiest way to impose assembly rules is to define them in a heuristic way on the product level.
For example restrictions on the mass, dimensions, number of parts or number of interconnections between parts intuitively lower the ease of assembly of a product.
Product level rules have the advantage that the rule evaluation only requires a description of the product and can be performed quickly.
However, inaccuracies in the evaluation may still result in a product design that requires a revision at a later stage of the design process.
More_advanced rules also consider the assembly sequence and environment_ (i.e. the order and steps needed to assemble the product starting from its individual parts).
To do so they evaluate how difficult each individual operation in the assembly sequence becomes for the given product design and then compute an aggregated measure for the whole sequence (typically the minimum or product of the individual operations).
The complexity of evaluating these assembly operations again depends on the level of detail in which they are described and
_can range from fast heuristics up to full blown physical simulations.
The goal of this internship:
The goal of this internship is to help us with the development and implementation of Algorithms to automatically evaluate Design-for-Assembly rules on a 3D geometry of the product within a CAD software tool.
In this way you will contribute to the Flanders Make DFATool code library which is used in multiple research projects.
Learning target:
You will learn how to create or improve algorithms to automatically evaluate industry relevant design-for-assembly rules staring from a 3D geometry of the product.
You will focus both on the computation and visualization of the rule evaluation and validate your algorithm(s) on real company cases.
Additionally, you will gain experience in presenting your technical results in industrial context.Literature reference:

- Master in (Mechanical) engineering, Master in Computer Science, Master in Industrial Engineering and Operational Sciences;
- Knowledge about programming in python or C# or C++ or MATLAB is required;
- Knowledge in 3D geometric modelling (shell, solid or mesh), Computer Aided Design (CAD) software and physics simulation are highly recommended;
- Some experience with object oriented programming is beneficial;
- Passion for research and new technologies with focus on the assembly process of mechanical/mechatronic systems;
- Result oriented, responsible and proactive;
- A good communicator, should be able to communicate in English;
- Eager to learn and a team player.
