In this job, you will join a tiger team focused on lean de-risking of the concept towards verification in an in vitro and in vivo setting.
You will drive the definition of system and subsystem requirements through simulations and link those with the experimental verifications run by your colleagues.
You will be responsible for identifying the subsystems, interfaces and describing the principle of operation and component functionality. As the central figure in the project, you master the different de-risking tracks cross-domains (i.e. neurobiology, acoustics, electrophysiology) and with that bird's-eye overview you will steer both internal and external development teams.In close collaboration with the project manager, you will ensure proper lean de-risking of the project by assessing the maturity levels (TRL/SRL) of each subcomponent and handling trade-offs & risks at system level.
You will team up with various sub-system development teams to keep the technical overview up to date and highlight system performance and risks accordingly.
You will report your progress, both to internal as well as external stakeholders.In this job, your main activities will be:
- Build a high-level overview of system functionality, identify subsystems, interfaces and assess their maturity level
- Develop models and test algorithms with signal analysis models, Simulink, Matlab or similar
- Simulate and analyze datasets of complicated signal patterns
- Model signal sources, noise sources, signal propagation, modulation/demodulation and detection
- Analyze results from simulations and lab experiments to identify patterns, trends, and tradeoffs
- Collaborate with team of instrumentation engineers, research scientists and system engineers/architects
- Identify, highlight, and communicate the impact of design choices of components/subsystems at the system level
- Develop and maintain a system level technical dashboard to keep track of system/subsystem development
- Collect requirements, own the system architecture and maintain relevant design control documents (risk analysis, design review, verification plans and others)
- Quickly adapt to new project requirements and effectively manage change requests.

Who you are
- You hold a PhD or MSc in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or Mathematics with at least a few years as a system architect/engineer for complex systems architect design
- You have experience in multidomain simulation tools (i.e. COMSOL, Matlab, Simulink) and analytical conceptual modelling
- You are an outofthebox thinker who's not pushed back by dealing with the unknown and the boundaries imposed by biology
- You have experience in working across domains with hardware (electronics/mechanics) and software tools (simulation/design)
- You are interested in (neuro)biology
- You quickly and naturally switch between handson execution skills and bird'seye system thinking
- You are a team player who can wear multiple hats
- You have excellent communication skills to liaise across domains and report on technical progress
- You are fluent in English
- You are willing to work at the Imec facilities in Leuven with the possibility of a hybrid working mode
- Experience in some of these specific items is a plus:
- Digital and analog system level analysis, transfer functions, State-space models (LTI systems)
- EEG and Acoustic transducers at theoretical level or handson experience
- Spectrum analyzers, RF amplifiers, oscilloscopes, lockin amplifiers.
