Description
The Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS) is a global collaborative platform that provides access to scientific data and information on the diversity, abundance, and distribution of marine species. OBIS is a vital component of the International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE), under the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO.
The primary goal of IODE is to boost marine research, utilization, and growth by facilitating the exchange of oceanographic data and information among member states and by creating applications that cater to the users' needs.
UNESCO/IOC collaborates on various European Horizon projects involving OBIS. They are looking to hire an Associate Project Officer to support the implementation of the following initiatives.
MARine COastal BiOdiversity Long-term Observations aims to enhance European coastal and marine biodiversity observation capabilities and integrate them globally. eDNAqua-Plan focuses on establishing a digital ecosystem for aquatic organisms' genetic data. DTO-BioFlow aims to incorporate biodiversity monitoring data into the Digital Twin Ocean project. Lastly, there is a project involving eDNA expeditions in marine World Heritage sites, engaging local communities in data collection and analysis.
The role involves managing ongoing EU project activities and advancing OBIS's involvement in molecular observations.
The main duties and responsibilities for this role include:
Timely Completion of Project Activities: Ensure successful execution of tasks, collaborating with teams, coordinating activities, and organizing meetings.Report Development: Draft comprehensive reports documenting progress and outcomes of projects.Outreach and Training: Lead initiatives to increase awareness about molecular observations in OBIS.Integration and Quality Control: Oversee the integration of observations into datasets maintaining high data quality.Responsiveness to User Community: Ensure observations meet users' evolving needs in science and biodiversity monitoring.Required Qualifications:
Education:
Masters degree or equivalent in environmental, marine, or biological sciences.Work Experience:
At least two (2) years of relevant work experience, preferably with 1 year at the international level.Skills:
Proficient in biodiversity informatics, with knowledge of R, Python, and Git software.Familiar with biodiversity data standards, especially relating to molecular methods.Good understanding of marine science, biodiversity monitoring, and eDNA.Practical experience with molecular methods in marine environments.Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.Effective communication and interpersonal skills.Excellent written and verbal English proficiency.Source:
