The Environmental Paper Network International is recruiting a Communications Professional to support the Forests Are Not Fuel Europe (FANFE) coalition campaign on the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS).

Job Location: Remote within the EU; candidate must be within commuting distance of Brussels
Closing Date: 4 October 2026, midnight CEST
Work Format: Part-time, predominantly remote - 10 working days per month
Contract: Freelancer contract, 12 months
Salary: €2,860 gross per month (€34,320 annually)

The role is suitable for an experienced communications professional with an interest in forests, climate policy, environmental campaigns and EU policymaking.

Key Responsibilities

The Communications Professional will:

• Plan, execute and coordinate the campaign’s communications strategy.
• Prepare communications materials including visuals, videos, press releases and social media posts.
• Develop materials that can be used by the campaign’s core team and coalition members during joint campaign activities.
• Coordinate joint communications activities across the coalition.
• Support the organisation of in-person events, including press conferences and campaign actions.
• Develop and maintain collective communications assets, including pictures, cartoons and articles.
• Monitor social media and traditional media coverage of biomass-related issues in international, EU and national media.
• Gather intelligence on industry communications.

Requirements

Must-Have Requirements

Candidates should have:

• Demonstrated experience in communications, including traditional and social media, preferably within environmental NGOs and/or campaigns.
• Proficiency in written and visual tools, audio and video media and editing tools.
• A professional network of journalist contacts at EU level.

Beneficial Experience

The following would be advantageous:

• Experience working with environmental NGOs and/or campaigns, preferably at international level.
• Experience working on climate, forest protection or woody biomass for energy purposes.
• Knowledge of at least one other European language besides English.
• Knowledge of the EU decision-making process.
• Knowledge of the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and EU Emissions Trading System (ETS).

Contract, Salary and Working Arrangements

The position is offered on a 12-month freelancer contract and is predominantly remote.

The remuneration is €2,860 gross per month for 10 working days per month, equivalent to €34,320 annually. EPN covers VAT if needed.

The position includes 15 days of paid annual leave.

The successful candidate can work on a self-employed basis or as an employee of one of EPN International’s member organisations, subject to agreement with the member organisation.

Although the role is predominantly remote, the successful candidate will need to make occasional visits to Brussels, approximately a couple of times during the 12-month period. The candidate must therefore live within commuting distance of Brussels.
