Background:
The governance of transboundary biodiversity is a complex issue that is largely understudied in Europe. This research project (‘TRANSNATURE’), which is funded in the context of Biodiversa+, aims to fill this gap by addressing three research questions. (1) To what extent and how do transboundary conservation areas involve different types of managing authorities and stakeholders ineffective governance mechanisms to enhance conservation? (2) To what extent and how does the stratification of different governance mechanisms in the same natural areas, such as World Heritage sites, European Groupings of Territorial Cooperation (EGTCs), national management authorities, subnational authorities and indigenous and community conserved areas, trigger processes that strengthen biodiversity conservation? Are there cooperation mechanisms or mechanisms of conflict resolution in place among the different actors involved? (3) To what extent can transboundary conservation areas contribute to stop ecological degradation by improving the prevention of both cross-border pollution and transnational wildlife crime in the EU? To respond to these questions, the project will analyze in detail and compare four case studies, amongst others, _Westerschelde (Netherlands/Belgium)_. TRANSNATURE aims to policy-making at the international, European, national and conservation area levels. Policy impact is ensured through a specific stakeholder engagement plan. TRANSNATURE aims to identify innovative governance models for biodiversity protection and stakeholder engagement, distill common governance principles and highlight best practices in study areas that are more advanced concerning aspects of transnational, vertical and horizontal cooperation

**YOUR TASKS**
- Conducting project-based scientific research in the field of governance of transboundary biodiversity.
- Conducting desk research on legal and policy documents at different levels on transboundary biodiversity governance, cross-border pollution, and transnational wildlife crime.
- Analyzing the legal and governance issues at play in governing transboundary governance in the context of the Westerschelde case-study.
- Mapping the most relevant existing examples of transboundary biodiversity protection and the specific features of their governance (even outside Europe to have a term of reference) (including the project’s study areas and related actors).
- Submitting research output for the topic on a regular basis.
- Organizing regular meetings with the project partners and organizing interviews with stakeholders.

**WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR**
- Applicants should possess a Masters degree (or equivalent) in law, with demonstrated knowledge of EU and international environmental law. Specific knowledge of international and EU biodiversity law is an asset.
- A postgraduate degree (LLM or other) focusing on public law or environmental law is an asset;
- Previous research or teaching experience is, especially in the field of biodiversity or environmental law an asset;
- Excellent English language proficiency is required.
- Excellent knowledge of Dutch is required in light of the case-study focused on Belgium/the Netherlands (Westerschelde).

**WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU**
- We offer you a contract of definite duration for the period of 2 years.
- Your contract will start on 1/03/2023 at the earliest.
