In your role as assistant food designer within the R&D Salty Snacks team you will support the food designers during the development and qualification of food
(Pringles, other snacks) for various top-and bottom line projects. In a laboratory environment you will support the planning, making & shipment of hand-seasoned food samples. Furthermore you will be responsible for the execution
& reporting of a series of analytical/characterization test to understand & predict behavior of raw materials/seasonings/finished product in the plant. You will also support the seasoning lab owner to maintain the lab systems and standards and
drive efficiency in the daily operation. All of this work is a key part of the overall R&D process. Delivering high quality food and data is absolutely critical to make the correct business decisions and meet key project milestones

As assistant food designer, you will become part of the KEU R&D Salty snacks food team working out of the lab/pilot facility in Mechelen, Belgium

You will report to the pilot plant leader, responsible for the R&D lab/ pilot facilities and will be working closely with 2 other assistant food designers who are responsible for the daily operation of R&D labs.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities
Planning, making and packing of hand-seasoned food samples in bags/cans for consumer research, sensory tests, shelf life test, taste samples and key (marketing) meetings etc., ensuring that all quality, safety and food safety standards are met. Hand seasoning involves the addition of seasoning/salt at a specific percentage to chips/snacks with a semi-automated device or tumble drum.
Organize and prepare shipments (including paperwork) of food samples or other materials for the whole team and follow-up on the delivery.
Assist the seasoning lab owner with daily operation of this area. This involves ensuring all activities are carried out in a safe manner and in accordance with company policies and quality and food safety standards. Maintaining the work area & equipment and drive efficiency in the ways of working. Follow-up on the calibration, maintenance and repair of equipment. Ensuring good housekeeping, setting and maintaining 5S standards and communicate outages towards the team. Maintaining the lab stock and ordering lab supplies as needed in a timely manner.
Execute a series of characterization tests (seasoning lab scorecard) during the qualification of new and reformulated seasonings, allowing to understand/predict the behavior on the production lines in the plant. This position requiresregular attendance and punctuality in accordance with Company policies. Additionally, the ability to interact well with other employees and work overtime, as necessary, isrequired. Document activities, record observations and test results, interpret findings, prepare graphs and reports. Additional support to be given to our broader salty snacks team
Assisting with sensory evaluations (food reviews) by setting up the food quality panel room, preparing the samples and documents that will be used during the food evaluation.
Assisting our team of food designers with the making of food samples during trials in the process kitchen/pilot plant.
Execute analytical tests to characterize/asses the quality of raw materials & finished product (salt measurement, viscosity analysis, texture analyzer, fat analysis etc.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
You like practical work, have attention for detail and perform tasks very accurately.
A considerable part of the time will be spent on the production and packing of hand seasoned samples which is repetitive work. The ability to stay focused and maintain accuracy while doing repetitive, routine tasks is critical.
Set-up of efficient, daily planning, time management and priority setting.
Independent delivery and good collaboration within internal stakeholder, food designers and suppliers are essential.
Flexibility to adapt to change in your workplan to ensure critical project deadlines are met. Effective communication skills and ability to perform well in a team environment.
Prior experience in a laboratory environment is a plus.
**Computer skills**: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Sharepoint.
**Languages**: a very good knowledge of Dutch and good knowledge of English
