Job Title: Protein Science Leader

Department: Research and Development

Reports To: Head of Research and Development

Location: Ghent, Belgium

Summary:
Seeks a visionary Protein Science Leader to spearhead its cutting-edge research initiatives. As a seasoned expert in protein science and structural analysis, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of GPCR-based therapeutics, driving the company's robust pipeline of innovative medicines forward.

Key Responsibilities:

- Oversee and direct the Protein Science team, providing expert guidance and leadership
- Design and implement innovative workflows to purify and characterize soluble and membrane proteins expressed in various cell systems
- Champion the implementation of protein purification techniques and protein quality assessment methods
- Utilize cryo-EM to enable active and inactive state GPCR complex structures with in-house identified compounds, facilitating structure-based drug design
- Collaborate closely with medicinal chemists, CADD, de novo antibody discovery teams, and molecular engineers to advance structure-based drug discovery, ConfoBody generation, and gene-to-structure integration
- Stay abreast of the latest advancements in cryoEM technologies and techniques, particularly in the context of GPCRs, and actively contribute to structural biology efforts
- Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with current structural biology contract research organizations
- Foster a collaborative and motivating work environment, supervising, coaching, and mentoring a team of scientists and research associates
- Lead the integrated discovery activities of projects as a core member of project teams, ensuring focus, clear project plans, and defined timelines

Qualifications:

- PhD or equivalent experience in a related field, complemented by at least 5 years of industry experience in a biotech or pharma setting
- Proven proficiency in protein engineering, cell culture, and protein expression in bacterial, insect, and mammalian systems
- Demonstrated expertise in GPCR purification and structure determination
- Comprehensive understanding of the entire single particle cryo-EM workflow, including protein vitrifications to determine high-resolution structures of desired conformational states of integral membrane proteins
- Hands-on experience in cryo-EM data collection, data processing to generate electron density maps, model building, and proficiency in associated software tools such as CryoSPARC, ChimeraX, Phenix, Coot, or similar
- Demonstrated proficiency with Alphafold and/or other computational approaches for protein design, structure prediction using homology modeling, molecular dynamic simulations, and protein-ligand docking
- Extensive experience in GPCR biophysical/biochemical characterization techniques such as fluorescence/analytical-SEC, thermostability, ITC, ligand binding, and G protein activation, as well as screening methods such as thermal shift, SPR, AF-MS, and NMR
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex research findings to both technical and non-technical audiences
