For our Diegem office in Belgium, we are looking for a Technical Lead/Senior System Architect to lead system engineering activities for the European Spectrum Management Service (ESMS) satellite project.

In this role, you will oversee the high-level design, manage technical requirements, and ensure compliance with ESA and ECSS standards. You will work closely with internal teams and external stakeholders to deliver a reliable, mission-compliant satellite system that supports Starion’s objectives in spectrum management.

Your mission will be to ensure, from design up to delivery and operations, the end-to-end Architecture of the space systems and solutions developed in Belgium, and to ensure their compliance and certification against applicable regulatory rules and best practices. You will work closely with other Starion teams, being involved in the concrete elaboration and delivery of projects to the clients.

Tasks and activities

The scope of work will include:

- Providing senior guidance to the technical teams on the delivery of complex telecom system engineering projects with strong DSP (digital signal processing) and SDR (software defined radio) components to ensure alignment with mission objectives, ECSS standards, and data processing requirements.
- Keeping the complete picture of the system, paying special attention to the successful integration of each of the subsystems.
- Oversee all system engineering activities, including requirements management, functional analysis, and high-level design trade-offs across various satellite domains. Leverage expertise in DSP, telecommunications, and RF engineering to enhance system functionality.
- Manage internal and external interface requirements, ensuring seamless integration and coordination with payload and launch partners to meet mission requirements.
- Plan and support the verification process, particularly for functional and environmental testing, ensuring all tests align with mission specifications, technical standards, and DSP and telecommunications objectives.
- Performing system requirements elicitation from defined use-cases and/or user requirements.
- Performing trade-offs of different architectures according to customer requirements.
- Act as a primary liaison with ESA, customers, and stakeholders.
- Providing best practice advice and guidance in the areas of systems Design, Development and Verification.
- Engaging with colleagues to enable transfer of knowledge.
- Supporting the delivery of high-quality, competitive proposals in response to customer Invitations to Tender (ITTs) or Requests for Proposal (RFP).
- Prepare and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, reports, and presentations to keep ESA and other stakeholders informed on progress, compliance status, and overall project status.

Skills and experience

The following skills and experience are mandatory:

- University Degree (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD) in Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of experience in systems engineering, ideally with a focus on small-satellite projects, telecommunications, DSP, and RF engineering.
- Familiar with systems engineering processes and methodologies.
- Relevant experience as a writer/lead writer on technical proposals.
- Expertise in DSP engineering, SDR, and telecommunications or RF engineering.
- Ability to bridge teams with different backgrounds and technologies.
- Familiarity with mission analysis and design tools (e.g., DOORS, STK, UML/SysML).
- Understanding of cloud infrastructure for data processing and knowledge of available data clouds and data processing standards.
- Attention to detail, excellent proofreading/editing skills, writing skills, and verbal communication skills.
- Extensive experience with Microsoft Office.
- Desire to work both autonomously and as part of a team, in an international multicultural environment.
- Solution oriented mindset, with a customer focused communication skill.
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken.

The following skills and experience would be highly desirable:

- Python scripting knowledge.
- Expertise in verification and testing processes for satellite systems and SDR.
- Good understanding of software systems (including embedded).
- Ability to identify elements from a complex network topology.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to conduct functional analysis and design trade-offs.
- Familiar with programmable logic devices (PLD) including FPGAs and CLPDs.
- Knowledge with Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methodology.
- Experience in programs/projects with the European Space Agency (ESA).
- Self-motivated and structured, with a responsible approach to work.
- Willingness to travel for business needs and support on-site work at test facilities, as required.
