Energy Systems Modeller

Climact is an independent energy & climate company, using models and data to drive down carbon emissions for both private and public organisations. We develop sophisticated, user-friendly and open-source models on the energy and climate systems at the global, national and city levels - and use our findings to improve energy and climate policy. **Role and responsibilities**:
Climact is recruiting a talented engineer who will support the development of our power and energy systems model with the rest of the modelling team. Climact's vision is to be able to provide top notch modelling of the energy system based on open-source models and data, and to be able to leverage these assets for our consulting practices, supporting both public and private actors towards a carbon-free energy system. The modelling team is growing as we expand our current models to more countries to cover all major economies, and also expanding the type of analysis and services we can provide (e.g., the impact on power and gas networks at the European level). Your role will be to support these model developments and support the extraction of the full data flow.

The position makes the interface between a team of seasoned consultants and a dedicated technical team.

It includes the following responsibilities:

- Contribute to the suite of Climact’s models, in co-creation with the consultants (who are more frequently in touch with client teams), and the technical team (who provides the programming environment and the tools).
- The main focus is to contribute to the energy and power production, transport and distribution sectors in the existing tools (in particular the Pathways Explorer, EUCalc), improving and refining the calculation workflows, from the raw data to the client results.
- Model within the programming environment set up by the technical team. Extensive use of visual programming (KNIME) and programming in Python (incl. exploiting the PyPSA model).
- Interpret the model results and become expert on the modelling of the power and energy sector.
- Contribute to the specification of energy & climate change scenarios, for a wide variety of geographies (EU and its member states, China, India, etc.).
- Contribute to developing analytics and data science expertise within Climact.

**Potential applicants should present the following experience and skills**:
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills is key.

Engineering degree and/or IT degree.

Knowledge of power system analysis (power flows, power system planning) is a must.

Practical experience of power system analysis is a strong asset.

2 to 5 years of relevant experience in programming/modelling/architecture design is a strong asset.

Technical experience in the following is a strong asset: modelling, visual programming (e.g. Knime or Alteryx), and programming (particularly in Python).

Asset-based consulting experience in programming/modelling is a plus.

Communication skills to interact with the consultants and technical team, to co-construct and refine the energy models.

Strong drive to contribute to the climate change challenge through energy models.

Ambition to grow as a modelling/programming expert for the power/energy sector at Climact.

Strong sense of creativity and autonomy.

Good communication skills (EN & FR & NL) - native NL is a strong plus.

Capability to harmonise best practices and perform quality reviews.
