Upstream Associate Scientist

**Make your mark for patients** We are looking for an **Upstream (USP) Associate Scientist** who is **flexible, collaborative and multi-task** to join us in our **Biologics Process Sciences** team, based in **Braine-l’Alleud**, **Belgium** **About the role** The position is based in a laboratory environment, and it implies **experiments in bioreactors** going from AMBR15 to 200L scales, in glass, stainless steel and single-use systems with a **strong focus on laboratory activity coordination/execution and management of the laboratory consumables inventory** (ordering and stock management). The Upstream Associate Scientist will spend > 80% of his/her time in the laboratory performing cell culture related activities. He/she may occasionally perform laboratory work during the weekend. All the activities will be performed in compliance with UCB’s Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) as well as Quality policies and standards and with the regulatory requirements for each development phase of the products. **Who you’ll work with**: - Valentine Chevallier, your Manager as well as many other great colleagues at transversal level. **What you’ll do**: - Support in **cell culture production**, harvest and clarification process development and optimization. He/she will: - work with scientific specialists in the techniques of cell culture, small scale purification and recombinant protein quality analysis. - develop an expertise in small scale bioreactor production - provide a strong support in media preparation. - play a crucial role to ensure the coordination of the laboratory activities and support laboratory experiments as experimental lead and team member. - perform daily laboratory activities related to upstream process development, understanding andoptimization - manage the completion and review of electronic batch record documentation and could also be asked to research, compile and present data from different lots/projects in order to troubleshoot general topics. - Be responsible for coordinating the activities related to the lab support. The Upstream Associate Scientist will for example manage the purchasing (SAP transaction) of consumables for the laboratory, specific equipments maintenance and metrology, procedure writing and consummables stock. **I**nterested? For this role we’re looking for the following **education, experience **and **skills** - Master’s degree preferred in Biology, Chemical Engineering or related discipline with at least 1 year of experience (or bachelor’s with a least 5 years of experience) working with cell culture, process development and/or cell culture media development. - Strong laboratory skills and a track record of spending >70% of current and past work function in the laboratory. - Technical expertise in mammalian-cell-based therapeutic protein expression and culture systems. - Good command of spoken and written scientific English is mandatory. - The Upstream Associate Scientist must demonstrate: - Flexibility and the ability to work in a team environment under deadlines. It requires good interpersonal skills in order to communicate and maintain fruitful working relationships with colleagues across departments and geographies, as well as with external partners. - Ability to multi-task, to organize and communicate large amounts of data.
