Context

In order to realize our ambitious objectives, Bank Degroof Petercam is looking to reinforce its legal department with a:
Legal Counsel

As a member of the central Legal Department of the Bank Degroof Petercam group (the “Group”), you will be part of a small and dynamic legal team dedicated to supporting and providing legal assistance to the management of the Group and the business and operational teams, including amongst others the Investment Banking department and the Private Banking department. You will follow up and be in charge of questions and files relating to (private) banking, financial, corporate and civil law matters. In addition you will also provide support on matters relating to intellectual property, IT and outsourcing contracting and data protection legislation. This is a broad and generalist in-house legal counsel role offering the opportunity to work on varied and diversified matters with the option to specialize over time.

Your Position

In this role you will:

- in general, provide day-to-day legal support as and where needed;
- assist, provide legal advice and make recommendations in relation to group strategic projects (including regulatory implementation projects). You would be involved throughout the project, from inception until the implementation;
- assist, provide legal advice and make recommendations to the management and various departments of the bank (including the Corporate Secretary, Compliance, Investment Banking and Private Banking) in relation to banking, financial and corporate regulations;
- assist the Group Data Protection Officer in files related to data protection legislation, intellectual property, IT and outsourcing contracting.
- assist, support and make recommendations to the business departments with respect to all legal and contractual documentation, including drafting documentation and letters to clients;
- follow up on claims and litigation files;
- stay well-informed of any new developments related to banking, financial, civil, general commercial law issues, inform your colleagues in this respect and ensure their implementation across the Group;
- develop, review and make recommendations in relation to contractual documentation, legal forms and template documents, in order to ensure that these are clear and up-to-date and anticipate/mitigate legal risks;
- organize training sessions in order to keep the bankers and other colleagues informed of relevant legal developments;
- ensure that legal opportunities and needs are effectively identified, assessed and managed in a business-oriented manner in line with local laws, regulations and best professional practices; and
- cooperate closely with other colleagues from the Legal Department and the Group Data Protection Officer Department (which is in an integral part of the Legal Department).

Your Profile

What we look for:

- Belgian Master in Law;
- 3 to 5 years of relevant professional experience gained in an in-house role within the legal department of a financial institution with a particular expertise or outspoken interest in banking and finance law combined with a generalist experience. We will consider applicants with relevant banking and finance experience gained in a law firm;
- experience in data protection legislation and/or in IT and outsourcing contracting in the banking sector is a plus;
- fluency in English (written and spoken) as well as French and/or Dutch;
- analytical thinker with sound business acumen, objectivity and accountability;
- ability to translate complex theoretical and legal principles into pragmatic and solution-oriented advice;
- true team player with an ability to build up good relationships with your colleagues (both within the legal department and the business departments);
- process-orientated, able to work autonomously, with excellent organizational skills; and
- excellent communication and interpersonal skills; and
- proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office.
