About ECF:
The European Climate Foundation (ECF) is a major philanthropic initiative working to help tackle the climate crisis by fostering the development of a net-zero emission society at the national, European and global level.
We support around 1000 partner organisations to carry out activities that drive urgent and ambitious policy in support of the objectives of the Paris Agreement, contribute to the public debate on climate action and help deliver a socially responsible transition to a net-zero economy and sustainable society in Europe and around the world.
Summary:
The ECF Buildings programme works with a wide range of partners in civil society, think-tanks, politics, business, and energy experts to support a well-managed and socially just transition of Europe's built environment in line with Europe's 2030 and 2050 climate targets.
The programme works to support policies and practice at EU and country level to secure a major increase in energy efficiency through building retrofits; to decarbonize heat supply through solutions such as electrification and district heating; and to address the embedded carbon in buildings.
Ensuring that social justice is at the heart of the transition is central to the programme's approach. Throughout our work we seek to make impactful and considerate philanthropic investment across civil society with strategic grant-making strategies.Position:
The role
We are looking for a Director for the Buildings Programme to lead ECF's work to secure a well-managed, socially just transition of the built environment away from heating and cooling based on fossil fuels.
The Director will lead a small core team, and work in close collaboration with ECF's country programmes and communications teams.
The Buildings programme forms a cornerstone of ECF's wider Fossil-Free Energy Campaign.
The Director will be responsible for driving and shaping a major ECF programme, at a time when helping citizens cope with high energy prices and poor quality housing is top of the political agenda across Europe.
They will be responsible for developing and implementing impactful strategies to support our network of partners at European and national level and to help drive forward a rapid, socially just and sustainable energy transition.
Key responsibilities
This job offers an excellent opportunity to lead and shape a major ECF program at a critical junction point in the energy transition in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
- Team Management: Lead the core buildings team, and develop knowledge centre functions such as peer learning and technical and strategic support for staff who work on buildings within countries. Support strong collaboration and team-work with ECF's country and strategic communications teams.
- Strategy implementation: Ensure robust strategy and tactics and coordinate effective implementation especially to minimise the risk of backlash with better integration of social justice in policy design and communications strategies, especially relating to heating, cost of home renovation and energy bills. The role will also work closely within the wider Fossil Free Energy campaign framework.
- Grantmaking: develop impactful grantmaking strategies, identify and build relationships with priority grantees, and maintain an overview of the programme budget
- Fundraising: supporting ECF fundraising activities for the Fossil Free Energy campaign and build and maintain excellent relations with key funding partners. Development of presentations and data, as well as context analysis and reporting to ECF's existing and other funders.
- Developing and scoping future strategic directions for the programme: including assessing the potential for a developing a broader perspective on the role of urban planning and infrastructure.
- Content expertise: Advice and support on developments in policy and best practice in Europe and globally and communicating these to colleagues and partners
- Internal & External coordination and communication: Liaise internally with ECF's other programmes and ensure proper and timely dissemination of information, overseeing dissemination of the findings and policy positions that result from ECFled projects, including via media outreach, government relations and public events;
- Monitoring and evaluation: Ensure that the programme operates to high performance standards in terms of impact, reporting, monitoring and evaluation.
