We are ground breaking new digital technologies such as 4G/5G mobile communications, cryptography, cloud computing and big data for use in physical protection systems, and critical information systems.
Thales Belgium SA, Belgium competence center of Thales, is a company located on 2 sites, one in Tubize (near Brussels) and the other one in Herstal (near Liège). Thales Belgium, which employs more than 280 collaborators, is specialized in the design, development and supply of critical information systems for customers in the sectors of Defense, Security (including Cyber) and Aerospace.
**Network Topology Template for Cyber Range - Addressing Network Issues**:
***Mission**:
As an intern specializing in network architecture and cybersecurity, your primary task will be to create a standardized network topology template. This template will serve as a foundational framework for addressing network problems commonly encountered in firewall, router, and switch configurations. The template will be designed to promote best practices and mitigate vulnerabilities in a straightforward, yet effective, manner.
**Key Responsibilities**:
1. Assessment of Network Issues: You will start by conducting an in-depth assessment of common network issues encountered around firewall, router, and switch configurations. This assessment will involve identifying pain points, inefficiencies, and vulnerabilities in the existing network architecture.
2. Template Design: Building on your assessment, you will proceed to design a standardized network topology template. This template should incorporate best practices for network segmentation, firewall rule management, and routing to address the identified network issues. It should include elements such as DMZ, Firewall, Router, Firewall, Server VLAN, and Workstation (WS) VLAN, configured in a logical and secure manner.
3. Documentation and Best Practices: Meticulous documentation of the template and best practices for its implementation will be a crucial part of your role. You will create clear and comprehensive documentation to guide users on how to implement and maintain this network architecture effectively.
4. Testing and Validation: Once the template is created, you will engage in testing and validation. This involves deploying the template in a controlled environment (e.g., a cyber range) to ensure its functionality and effectiveness in addressing network issues. You will simulate network scenarios to validate its performance.
5. Customization Options: While the template aims to be standardized, you will also explore options for customization to accommodate specific organizational needs. This may involve considering variations based on the size and complexity of different networks.
6. Integration with Cyber Range: A critical aspect of this internship is integrating the network topology template into the CyberLab's cyber range environment. You will ensure seamless compatibility and functionality within the cyber range for training, testing, and simulation purposes.
7. Documentation and Training Materials: Your role includes creating training materials and documentation to help users understand and utilize the network topology template effectively. This may involve developing guides, tutorials, and instructional content.
By the end of your internship, you will have designed a standardized network topology template that addresses common network problems around firewall, router, and switch configurations. This template will serve as a valuable resource for cyberlab aiming to enhance our network security posture.
