We are looking for a dynamic correspondent to cover European security and diplomacy, now one of the most critical beats in the region with the war in Ukraine and tensions between Russia and the West running at their highest since the Cold War.
The role will be based in Brussels, headquarters of both NATO and the European Union. The correspondent will cover NATO’s emergence from years of doubt about its relevance as Russia threatens the alliance’s eastern flank, with a scramble by European nations to boost military spending and a new strategic concept that will include challenges from China’s rise, cyberwarfare and mounting great-power competition in the Arctic.
An understanding of military affairs and experience covering conflicts and/or defense issues would be an advantage. On the EU side, the correspondent will follow the 27-nation bloc’s efforts to add heft to its soft-power status in the face of the same geopolitical challenges: national priorities and anti-EU populism in several member states make agreement on energy crisis solutions, economic sanctions, climate change ambitions and coping with migrants - to name just four issues - a messy business that is suited to reporters who are great at building contacts and are hungry to break news. The EU’s next enlargement into the Western Balkans and, now, also eastwards to Ukraine and Moldova will be part of the correspondent’s beat. The correspondent will be expected to generate stories that go beyond the big geopolitical narrative to show the EU’s struggle with structure and decision-making as its center of gravity moves eastwards and new member states take its population past half a billion.
The role will require frequent travel across Europe for summits and meetings of foreign ministers, as well as reporting trips for initiative stories and reinforcing teams covering conflicts and other crises. The correspondent will also be part of a small team covering the blitz of day-to-day EU news and so must be able to report and write under pressure on a broad range of issues beyond the security and diplomacy beat.
To be our Europe Security & Diplomatic Correspondent, you will likely have:
An understanding of military affairs, and experience covering conflicts and/or defense issues
Knowledge of how NATO and the EU works, preferably with established sources in both institutions
A track record as an all-round journalist who can write strong copy in English at speed, with attention to accuracy and balance
Experience working as part of a team across borders and media
A talent for developing sources and a track record of breaking news that sets the agenda
A record of generating high-impact long-form stories
Experience working with visuals journalists, and at least basic knowledge of video/photography news skills
Fluent English, and preferably strong skills in French, other European languages and/or Russian
