**Development of a portable and modular simulation and service tool for Large Caliber Gun systems**

**1. **THESIS DESCRIPTION**

The goal of this thesis is to develop a portable and modular simulation tool that allows to simulate a

complete large caliber gun shot cycle in order to test, debug and service the turret control system

without shooting real ammo.

The system will be modular in order to simulate the different types of sensors actual present on the

gun system.

Predefined scenario’s will simulate different gun behaviours for different ammo types, misfires,

stucked ammo or shells, defects on one of the sensors or mechanical part, gun wear.

**1.1- Define the needs**

The student will start by understanding how our systems are working (especially large caliber

sensors system) and refine the requirements for the development.

**1.2-Conceptual design**

Define and evaluate some potential concepts, component and module selection.

**1.3-Create the prototype hardware and software**

Design of a prototype hardware board for the interfaces as close as possible to the end product and

write the modular software to simulate the defined scenarios.
- **SUBJECT DISCUSSED DURING THESIS**
- Large caliber gun sensor data acquisition and processing.
- Large Caliber Gun behavior, fault analysis
- RS232, CAN, I/O, Modbus, RS485/422, battery charge and monitoring
- Embedded software development with attention to layer abstraction
- PCB design using Altium, layout best practices, IPC-2222
- Eventual Mechanical design and 3D drawing/printing prototype enclosure.
- Military specifications: EMC, shock, vibrations,
- **STUDENT INTERNAL SUPPORT**

During this thesis, the student will be supported by the electronic R&D department and the electronic industrialization and prototyping department of John Cockerill Defense.

4. **REQUIRED LANGUAGE**
