This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Programme Manager to contribute to ClientEarth’s work to protect the world’s forests and strengthen Indigenous Peoples’ and Local Communities’ rights on land and forestry governance. The Programme Manager will use their experience of programme (including financial) management, partner engagement and monitoring, evaluation and learning to facilitate strategic decision-making and the smooth delivery of our programmes.
You will manage a portfolio of projects, with a primary geographic scope in Africa, and a possible focus on Asia and South America as well. The portfolio will include a multi-year institutionally funded programme of work in West and Central Africa, addressing issues relating to forest governance, climate change and community land rights. The post holder will need to ensure high impact projects are delivered in compliance with internal policies and funder requirements. An important part of the role will be to help establish consistent and effective working practices across the portfolio so that projects and partnerships are well managed within the programmes.
This role is a fixed 1-year position, with renewal dependent upon funding.
**Meet your Manager**
In this role, you will be managed by Ailsa Griffith. Ailsa joined ClientEarth in 2020 and is based in London.
Main Duties
- Support ClientEarth’s relationships with partners in Africa, ensuring best practice in partner engagement. Model positive partnership behaviours and ensure the close collaboration between team members and partners. This includes continuing to innovate and strengthen the way in which ClientEarth engages with partners, especially in light of the decolonising aid agenda.
- Manage six-seven figure budgets across the mix of projects (in collaboration with budget holders and Finance Business Partners) and facilitate effective budget management. This includes establishing sound financial reporting and forecasting practices for partners.
- Supervision and management of Senior/Programme Officers, including developing a good understanding of their skills, abilities and ways of working, in order to help ensure effective team working and fair allocation of work within your team and the larger Programme Management Group.

Role requirements
- Fluency (CEFR level C2) in English and French
- Experience of programme management for large complex programmes in the NGO/not-for-profit sector, with substantial budgets (six-seven figure) and diverse stakeholders inside and outside an organisation
- Experience of day-to-day line management of a small team, including remotely, and providing guidance and development opportunities to team members
- Experience of leading or facilitating monitoring, evaluation and learning for large and complex projects in the NGO/not-for-profit sector
