Are you passionate about improving food safety from farm to fork? Do you want to contribute to multi-disciplinary & innovative projects aiming to improve food safety in African countries?
A postdoctoral position is available for a period of 2 years at the Centre of Excellence in Mycotoxicology & Public Health (FW03) for a highly motivated scientist to join the Horizon Europe project UP-RISE and the MYTOX-SOUTH® network.
The UP-RISE EU-African Union (AU) project integrates food safety practices associated with mycotoxin contamination into all aspects of food production, distribution, marketing and consumption in the AU and provides tangible tools and strategies to enhance inclusive participation in the improved African Food Safety System (AFSS) at the local, national and regional level. UP-RISE activities are aligned with the current AU Food Safety Strategy for Africa, focusing on 3 regions of the AU with field work in 5 target member states (Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Kenya, and South-Africa). UP-RISE assembles 5 building blocks for knowledge generation and implementation: 1) Roadmaps for a shared quality culture and possible integration of the informal sector in the AFSS; 2) Strengthening the food safety regulatory framework with focus on mycotoxins in both formal and informal sectors; 3) Early warning to prevent mycotoxin contamination and adapt to climate change; 4) Prevention of food losses and improving food safety by providing innovative microbiome-based solutions for mycotoxin reduction and nutritious food and 5) Co-creation, training and mentoring. In total, nine joint PhD students will work in a complementary way to contribute to the building blocks, each with a specific focus on a fermented food value chain.
We are searching for a postdoctoral researcher, based at Ghent University, Belgium who will be part of the coordination team of the projects, with high responsibilities for scientific project management.
You will join a motivated international project team of excellent researchers and professors from Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, France, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Kenya and South-Africa who have worked together to establish this high-quality AU-EU food safety consortium.
You will be responsible as scientific project manager for the UP-RISE project with following tasks:
- Scientific project management of work packages related to the above described 5 building blocks
- Keeping track of expected results, milestones and deliverables
- Communication with the coordinator, project management team and work package leaders
- Contributing to scientific activities in each building block with focus on mycotoxin analysis using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and rapid testing, and risk assessment
- Keeping overview of all incoming scientific results from each project partner for each project activity
- Co-supervising 5 PhD students who will join the research team in Ghent for 7 to 24 months, depending on the UP-RISE PhD topic
- Drafting deliverables and mandatory reports throughout the project
- Contributing to scientific publications and project dissemination activities
You will be responsible as operational manager of the MYTOX-SOUTH® network with following tasks:
- Updating MYTOX-SOUTH® partners on news, such as available funding opportunities, conferences or research stays
- Follow-up of MYTOX-SOUTH® project activities
- Supervising of visiting students in the context of traineeships
- Contributing to new project ideas where MYTOX-SOUTH® can be of significant importance, such as organising trainings or webinars on mycotoxin topics
- Contributing to enhancing the visibility of MYTOX-SOUTH® by for instance participation at conferences and through social media
- Drafting reports on progress made towards initial goals of MYTOX-SOUTH®
